What sucks about this artist: Morrissey edition

Time for a new thread; think we've worn Clapton down to a nub at this point! :D

I don't know a whole lot about Morrissey but I'm inclined to say moany ****er wah wah wah my life sucks? No? Have your say, good or bad.

rubber soul 01-09-2022 05:24 AM

Great with the Smiths, solo career a bit more spotty though there are some gems. Always manic depressive. Perfect music to commit suicide to.

The Batlord 01-09-2022 05:54 AM

If he wasn't such a pretentious whiner he wouldn't be nearly as compelling a singer.

elphenor 01-09-2022 11:40 AM

again the racism lol

Tubeileh 01-09-2022 07:36 PM

he has a nice voice, seems like an interesting character, but very distinctive and niche audience

Psy-Fi 01-10-2022 05:48 AM

The Smiths never interested me much and I couldn't care less about Morrissey outside of the Smiths. On both counts it's because of the way he sings.

rubber soul 01-10-2022 06:22 AM

Well, admittedly, Morrissey's singing is a bit, well, monotonous. For me I go with the melodies and Johnny Marr's guitar playing when it comes to the Smiths. As far as the solo career, well, I guess you still have the melodies.

Johnny Marr was easily the most interesting member of the Smiths for me. I never cared enough about the band to bother going to see them perform live but I did get to see Johnny Marr with The The on the 'Mind Bomb' tour which was fantastic!

The Smiths were/are incredibly popular

Moz is one of England's biggest popstars

The Batlord 01-10-2022 12:02 PM

Maybe in England they were.

Frownland 01-10-2022 02:31 PM

His autobiography looks like a hilarious character study in pretension.

they were particularly popular in Spanish speaking parts of the world Moz still holds probably the most rabid Latino fanbase of any British performer ever

don't sleep on the rhythm section, Mike Joyce is a pretty rad punk drummer

that would probably be fun

but I have to say Marr's solo stuff is pretty ****ing snoozy most the time, his style doesn't lend well to being a main attraction

that's actually what's great about it, and I miss rock bands that are set-ups for a unique vocalist...not a lot of those kinds of groups anymore

it truly is
also, the bit about his young years can be genuinely moving but when he gets to the later years large pieces of it are boring self-indulgence

I'm not emotionally invested in the popularity of The Smiths

it's just a fact that they remain incredibly relevant all across the world

nobody doubts a Smiths reunion would sell out arenas

This reads like ad copy. If The Smiths booked an arena in LA I suspect they would be sorely disappointed at the ticket sales.

Frownland 01-10-2022 06:03 PM

Ja COVID really hurt ticket sales for big events like that.

HaHa, that's true, although the "sucks" thread about Pink Floyd was about twice as long. Can we make the lazy inference, therefore, that P Floyd suck twice as much as EC ?

As for Morrissey, I don't think I've ever heard him, so from me, he gets a clear pass: doesn't suck at all.

Thanks for choosing a song for me. It has quite a pleasant, poppy sound. To me, the lyrics, linking love and death have a kind of over-dramatic adolescent feel to them.

So, first impression: he doesn't exactly suck, but I'm already pretty close to Psy-Fi's neat dismissal:-

Yeah but the thread isn't what sucks about The Smiths...

Not if they booked as The Triumphant Return of JFK Jr, with special guest star Donald Trump! Tickets would sell out in seconds to the QAnon crowd!

Without question, the single biggest and most important impact Coronavirus has had on the world.

Quite happily I would imagine. And again, thread is not about The Smiths but Morrissey himself. Personally, I can't get past his whiny, I'm-so-sad-everyone-is-against-me self-pitying college kid lyrics. But what sucks about him most is his quote that Hitler was left-wing. Jesus Christ on a jetski, completely out of control heading towards a cruise liner and unable to make course corrections in time, while a pod of dolphins close their eyes and wait!

By being a normal person whose identity isn't based on music.

rubber soul 01-11-2022 06:27 AM

Ah, but how can you mention Morrissey without mentioning the Smiths? That's like saying what sucks about Paul McCartney without mentioning the Beatles.

Thanks for that endorsement! The fact is that partly from choice and partly from circumstance, I was pretty much disconnected from mainstream media for about two decades: no radio, only Mexican tv, no internet. Plus my friends were mainly recommending artists from the 60s and 70s - but then came the internet, MB and Batlord to bring me up to date. :thumb:
