Classic Album Wars!
Not just albums you consider classics: the basic criterion is that they must be at least known of, if not respected, outside of their own genre. Ideally it should be two albums from the same or at least similar genre, so no Thriller vs Ace of Spades, for instance. Other than that, all genres acceptable.
Basic and simple rule: once one album pulls ahead by five votes relative to the other, it's declared the winner and a new battle has to be set. Only one battle at a time, so don't all rush at once. I said, don't all rush at once. Um. Anyone want to start? Anyone...? :shycouch: |
Ok, I'll be serious this time

I don't know either of those.
You hippy. |
Really? My god, they don't get more classic than that.

Forever Changes.
Odessey and Oracle is good but not a mind-blower to me like Forever Changes is. |
Forever Changes - 3
Odessey and Oracle - 0 |
I love Odessey and Oracle obviously, but, yeah, I have to go with Forever Changes too.
|
That's an interesting choice, rs, and a good start to this thread.
Zombies: their sound was so tied up with Colin Blunstone's voice that I feel it limited what they could ever do as a group; everything was a variation of a smooth, spooky mood, and although Time of the Season is good, most of this album suffers for that reason imo. Nice sound, but short tracks that are somehow both unnecessarily complicated and inconsequential at the same time. Love: in comparison, Forever Changes sounds so clear and fresh. The excellent songwriting and the uncluttered instrumentation make this the easy winner for me. Accumulating Vote: Forever Changes: 5 Odessy And Oracle:0 So that's a win for Forever Changes by my reckoning. ("Sometimes I deal in numbers....") |
I'll choose the next lineup

Are you sure? Trollheart may have not of heard of them :D
|
I should think Endtroducing would be the more logical album to put against Donuts. Or at least another instrumental hip hop album.
|
That would be another boring landslide though, so I went with another Stones Throw album on Donuts' level.

Still have to give Madvillainy a full listen (very familiar with them) but J Dilla isn't bad. |
MADVILLIAN ...hands down
|
Not my genre, obviously, but have to admit you picked two good ones, Frownie.
As mentioned, I surprisingly liked Donuts, but I still have to lean towards Madvillany for their quirkiness above everything else. |
Donuts - 0
Madvillainry - 2 |
My vote is for Donuts, I love MV a lot too, but only more recently did it click for me. Donuts is so full of great and powerful ideas and the soul element to it is what draws me to it the most perhaps next to the drunken drum patterns that fit so well.

Donuts - 1
Madvillainry - 2 Beginning to make a fight of it... |
Madvillainy (no r) is pretty much perfect, but I'm going with Donuts. The album starts by establishing Dilla's journey as an artist to get to the new sounds he was putting out before there seems to be a realization of something being wrong. From there, the album is a sequence of ruminations on his life/death, desperate last hurrahs, bouts of horrible sickness, fleeting dreams and memories, messages to those he's leaving behind, and a final acceptance of death. It's an emotional rollercoaster, and even if it wasn't, at its core it's a stellar collection of beats.
Donuts - 2 Madvillainy - 2 |
I'll break the tie.
Madvillainy. Sh*t just goes harder. Perfect blend of clever lyricism with saucy instrumentals. I do prefer Entroducing over the the two though. |
