Never heard, but have read articles by music journalists harping on about:

Grateful Dead (has anybody?)
Velvet Underground
The Ronettes
Nick Drake
The Mars Volta
The Yardbirds

Occasionally I hear a lot about a band/singer and the reputation is built up so much that when I finally hear the music it can be a bit disappointing. In the last few weeks I've heard music by Bloc Party and Tim Buckley for the first time and was a long way from being impressed. Best to hear music as soon as possible and get it out of your system!

An addition:

Anthony and the Johnstons

They just won the Mercury Music Prize, with very few people having heard of them (which is probably the best way), so I'd better hear them as soon as possible...

I'm pretty sure I've never heard a song by Phish. I also couldn't identify the Velvet Underground.
