Songs you loved at first but came to resent due to overplay? :/

Forgive me if this very thread has already been started and feel free to merge it with an already existing thread if this one already exists.

Human by The Human League used to be my favorite song in the whole world (It's haunting, chilling, beautiful, enthralling)until an 80's Music Channel overplayed it and I actually begun to resent it. It's been years since I heard that 80's Music Channel do that to Human and to this day ,Human is just one of my favorite songs in the whole world, and no longer my sole favorite song in the whole world thanks to that 80's Music Channel overplaying it.

Yeah, I don't get how these radio stations play the same 50 songs when they have a large catalog to choose from by default. It was the same way at an oldies station I used to listen to in the nineties. For me, the song I dread because of overplay is Love Potion No 9 by the Searchers.

There can be only one...

Spoiler for The Only One:

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird

About Love Potion Number 9, a long time ago, I misheard the lyrics as,"Love Potion of the night! LMAO! :D

I'm beginning to resent Hopelessly Devoted To You by Olivia Newton-John. After her death, my local radio station has been playing this song quite considerably. It's a beautiful song, but overplaying is not cool.

DriveYourCarDownToTheSea 10-31-2022 06:40 PM

There is so much 80's stuff that gets (over) played in my supermarket sometimes I wanna scream.

Norg 11-02-2022 12:07 AM

if i "love" a song im loving it 4 Life

JanzigDoplin 11-26-2022 12:58 AM

"Paralyzer," by Finger 11, was a good groove...at first.

Though I've never liked sappy music, we need more lyrics like that with all the songs saying men are useless that get radio play these days.

gandhara 12-06-2022 11:33 PM

Everything overplayed on the radio in the last 30 or so years that I used to love at first but then got so overplayed it drives me crazy! haha!!

I love my 80's and early 90's club music (my favorite music is 80's style electronic disco/dance up through to the early-mid 90's euro house)...but I tend to prefer more obscure songs opposed to massively popular ones about every time...

Two Of Hearts by Stacey Q used to be a big favorite, but the massive radio play has tarnished that lol...

I still like We Connect though...It's not played as often thankfully.

Saulaac 12-07-2022 02:16 PM

Hey gandhara, I remember you were on the soul/funk rapper's clavinet thread a while back.

Was wondering, do you listen to Jamiroquai? They seemed to start off really soul/funky around 1993 and then went progressively more dance-y. Songs like “(Don't) Give Hate a Chance” (2005) are nice.

Also, what are your favourite house tracks from the mid-90s? I remember teh UK's Ministry of Sound played some bangers then like De 'Lacy Hideaway, Gypsy Woman..

gandhara 12-09-2022 04:01 AM

hey Saulaac how's it going? Have we ever chatted on here in the past? I don't come on here much anymore, just from time to time if I see a topic that interests me. Jamiroquai is fine, not my cup of tea but I liked their 90's stuff. They might be a little too tame for me lol. De 'Lacy Hideaway sounds more like what I'd like. '95 was about the tail end of the oldschool House sound before it morphed into new sounds I don't care for.

But I have some Euro House lists up on Discogs I created like 5 years ago..My Italian House one has over 500 different records from '88 to '96. I don't know where I found the time to catalogue all that!

https://www.discogs.com/lists/The-Be...88-1996/265413

I have a smaller British House one, but I like a lot more of these records than just 40..

https://www.discogs.com/lists/The-Be...88-1995/298581

And I like House music from several other places just didn't make any lists of them....But as you can see my preference is mostly the early 90's, but you'll still find a few from the middle of the decade. :)

What are some of your favorite House bangers?

gandhara 12-09-2022 04:11 AM

Now I'm trying to think of some House tunes from the early 90's that get soooo overplayed that even I can't stand them anymore... like Groove Is In The Heart by Delight (?)!! Nope can't do that one no more!! :P

But I still love me some Pump Up The Jam by Technotronic!! Overplayed for a reason, that ****s still Jammin' lol

What else, oh yeah...2 Unlimited...overplayed to death... Twilight Zone and No Limit both suck!!

JEABOI 12-09-2022 06:30 AM

Almost all the songs I listen to lol. This is a bad habit of mine but it hurt the most with Passionfruit.

Cheers gandhara, will defo listen to your playlists! You Italian Stallion.

Dunno why but I remember your post and interest in soul/funk and I think I have a weird obsession (medical condition) with trying to identify tunes: https://www.musicbanter.com/soul-fun...ml#post2213258

Can't really remember my favourites. They're were many good ones. I have a soft spot for Moloko's "Bring it back" which was very chill funky.

Mr. Vain was overplayed a lot on UK radio and it was quite sh*te from the start.

Mr. Vain!! I used to love that one

But that's when I was like 12, Eurodance was big everywhere in the mid 90's! Some of it was great but a lot of it was trash. Culture Beat wasn't too bad, check out their earlier stuff as it's proper House. Mr. Vain was just copying off of "Rhythm Is A Dancer" by Snap and "More & More" by Captain Hollywood..

Real McCoy was overplayed as hell in roller skating joints and I'm sure Mr. Vain was part of that rotation! But I can't listen to either of those now! lol

Maybe the worst lyrics of any song I've ever heard

It's the business model. It's used to juice listeners who are in the car for a non-consecutive 3 hours a day. Then sponsorships.

I had to look this one up because I had never heard of it. Just watched the video and I thought it was a pretty ok pop song, not amazing but reasonably catchy. Is this something that was overplayed somewhere?

Is any of her other songs played at all?

When I saw this chat, the first song that came to mind is "What Was I Thinking?" from Dierks Bentley. When that song was first released, I loved it. I haven't grown to hate it any, but in my opinion, it has become way overplayed. To me, Dierks has plenty of songs that are way better. If anything, he was only just getting started with that one song since it was his first song on the radio anyway.

God bless you and him always!!!

Holly

I no longer listen to classic songs from the 1960s (e.g. Beatles chestnuts) which I fell in love with when I was a kid. I have listened and relistened to those songs so many, many times that they now bore me.
