check out celeste (get nihiliste(s)) and amenra from france, and heaven in her arms and lhasa. both from japan. lhasa only has three songs though, on a split w/ raein and daitro.

celeste probably fits what you want the most. they have a bit of a black metal influence as well.

I have lhasa, they're kind of the reason why I want more stuff. Will check out the rest.

Edit: I last.fm'ed Amenra, saw it tagged as "doom" and I came. That is all.

check out a band named Titan, from Toronto. They play heavier screamo mixed with Buried Inside influences. They did a split with June Paik as well, and the song on there rules. Denovali has a few doom-ish releases, like Bossk, which I think is pretty good.

I have always resented Emo, but these early Emotional Hardcore bands sound interesting, I will check them out tomorrow.

Questions:

1. Are Saves the Day emo?
2. Are they pop-punk?
3. Is it possible to be both?

Well, a lot of people seem to consider Jawbreaker "true emo".

I like real emo, specially sdrs, fugazi, rites of spring and texas is the reason...
buuuuuuuuut I still can't see the difference between post-hardcore, scremo, metalcore and grindcore (ok, the last two are quite clear to me now, but there are so many cores that it's too much for my tiny brain to get) would anyone be kind enough to explain?

sleepy jack 12-22-2010 05:59 PM

Post-hardcore is a really broad/stupid term that is thrown at anything from the entire emo/screamo movement, to popular bands like Rise Against and Strike Anywhere, to those new wave mtvmo bands like Hawthorne Heights because they have screaming, to mathy bands like the Fall of Troy, or experimental hardcore bands like the Blood Brothers. Basically, post-hardcore is anything hardcore that isn't the Circle Jerks, Minor Threat, Black Flag and Bad Brains. It's a really stupid term, I'm sure at one time it meant something though.

In my experience the best way to tell a metalcore band and a grindcore band apart is by looking like at how the band dresses. If one of them looks like they shop at hot topic, they're probably metalcore.

Nah but seriously, metalcore is typically really really big on breakdown and is basically a combination of hardcore and metal. Grindcore is more diverse, it has elements of thrash, and speed metal and you're more likely to hear squeeling, barking, and the singer making weird noises. It's more aggressive and way less formulaic for the most part.

great explanation, thanks!

so, just to set some examples, As I lay dying is a metalcore band... and Napalm Death is a grindcore band (now that I hear them both I can tell the difference)

what about scremo? which are scremo bands? it sounds pretty similar to metalcore to me.

sleepy jack 12-22-2010 07:22 PM

Screamo is emo. I think the term screamo only started being used following bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and Texas is the Reason using emo to describe their influence from bands like Rites of Spring. It's what traditional emotive hardcore is supposed to sound like, though many screamo bands (like Circle Takes the Square and Envy) have strayed from the traditional sound to explorer doom/post-rock influences.

Screamo bands: pg.99, Ampere, Joshua Fit For Battle, Hot Cross, Welcome the Plague Year, You and I, Neil Perry, Malady, She Died Real Pretty, Envy, Orchid, Amanda Woodward, Kidcrash

Thanks for this. I really really love American Football and just thought to check out some more emo music from around the same time and I am enjoying all of it. Jets To Brazil has some real good stuff from what I have heard so far.
