Emo vs. Punk Rock

This is for IndieRiot...His standards of Emo differ from mine so I thought I would post my opinions about emo and let you all post yours.

I believe that Emo Music has different styles...There is the kind like Dashboard Confessional and Simple Plan...this I consider pure Emo...in which they do sing about their girlfriends dumping them and such. I also feel there is a more punk influenced Emo, such as Thrusday, Ataris, and From Autumn to Ashes. Which has similar topics, but doesn't have the whiney style...

I feel Punk Rock is more ragged sounding. It has less done to it...sounds the same in concert. Most punk rock is not about the same topics as emo, but more about politics, rebellion, and absolutely nothing. I dont feel Blink or good Charlotte are punk rock.

Let me know what you all think.

banonbush 01-22-2004 11:10 PM

I agree for the most part with everythign you are saying. except that simple plan isn't emo, but poppunk, definily pop punk, to a new level of poorness. and that from autumn to ashes is screamo with death metal like vocals. You are definitly correct about good charlotte and blink not being punk, however, blink does play decent music. NOt punk music, but music. Punk is defnintly about politics, and not caring about everything including me and you. just my opinions

Thrice 01-23-2004 02:19 PM

I agree with most of what you said. I think Simple Plan is PopPunk, but has alot of Emo influence in thier music.

banonbush 01-24-2004 10:01 AM

Yeah, definitly some influence. I did buy tickets to go see them...actually mxpx, but they happen to be with them. Should be an excellent show. mxpx, oh yeah

MobilizeTerror 01-24-2004 02:39 PM

Yea I agree with what you said about the pure emo and more punk emo, but the bands, I dont really know anything about most of them, so I dunno which are emo and stuff..

sorry, but i simply can't agree with you in this... especially that thursday is punk influenced. i definitly think, that thursday has nothing to do with punk. i can't find any typical punk style in their music... and i known it very well since it's my favorite band ;D i would rather say, that it's emocore. emocore is, in my opinion, simply harder than emo, but still, how you said, with the same topics...
and where i can't agree with you, too, is that you consider the ataris to be emo. in my opinion they do punk rock, just as lagwagon and such... simply the punk music style with "normal" lyrics - lyrics with no topics like rebllion, the system, etc....

well, that's just my opinion, maybe you could think about it...

banonbush 01-27-2004 08:28 AM

OMG rme... right on with thursday, finally, someone who likes thursday more than thrice on this forum!!! hehe, just kidding. It's all good. Good job with the emocore, even though thursday has their own spin on it, which makes them my favorite

Thrice 01-27-2004 12:42 PM

Yeah good call, By punk i meant the more raw sound to it. I didnt know how to describe it. Thanks for opinion, i took it into cinsideration. Your opinions help me form my own, better opinions, and make me more knowledgable. :)

hettie 02-02-2004 02:12 AM

i hate thrice, dont hate me too much for saying that.

listen to bands such as sunny day real estate, mineral, fugazi, the velvet teen, and im too hung over to think right now!

oh yeah, you'll probs like coheed and cambria too xx

Akron Demonark 07-09-2005 07:17 AM

You actually do bring up a good point, but it is only human nature to stereotype and be stereotypical of people.

Usually most emo kids fit the description of a stereotype, which is what a stereotype is.

Electric Ocean 07-09-2005 07:23 AM

Alot of "emo" kids (the ones you see around the place with black hair and the like) don't actually listen to any emo though, most listen to a handful of bands that have recently been getting airplay on all the music channels that are basically pop-punk bands with minimal screaming and then write "deep" things on their myspaces. Maybe I'm generalising now too but the people you are putting down aren't the majority of people who post at this forum.

Akron Demonark 07-09-2005 07:42 AM

it is actually quite rare to see an emo kid with black hair.

Usually they have ridiculous hair styles in ridiculous hair colors.

Electric Ocean 07-09-2005 07:46 AM

Nice way to miss my point...

Hahaha, yeah I've seen some crazy things going on in that scene. Reason they can't get black hair is because they really do care what mummy thinks because they're about a tenth as hardcore and detached as they make out.

These kids are the ones that depress themselves and say that life isn't worth it as they embelish they're domestic problems to such an extent they cry themselves to sleep - they use they're friends as scapegoats and say deep **** like they'd kill themselves but they wouldn't want to put they're friends through it (yeah, whatever, never mind.)

I can't help but find this part of society subconsciencely being murdered by machine gun in the back of my head - especially the guys that act like this. I'm a ****ed up sicko now? So be it. :soapbox:

ladyluckrules 07-09-2005 11:17 AM

Hey if all the emo kids have 'killed themselves', then whats the point in bitching about them.

EddyEdwards 07-10-2005 06:31 AM

Because they keep bitching they will and they don't, so all they do is bitch about doing something that grim I don't want to hear about it so often if at all?

And thats why i like it. :ar_15s:

partisan 07-10-2005 07:36 AM

you japseye, you know nothing about punk rock.

pastor of muppets 07-10-2005 07:43 AM

so what if he knows anything about punk rock, hes allowed to post his opinion

sleepy jack 07-10-2005 05:41 PM

Well this whole thread has pretyt much been wrong simpleplan,GC etc.. are pop rock i really dont think you can clump the really poppy ataris into punk at all.Punk has nothing to do with half the bands thrice mentioned as stated before but whatever....

EddyEdwards 07-15-2005 06:59 AM

I half agree, Blink 182 sing about anything and just apply the punk sound and feel. Simple Plan IMO is emo because - from what I have heard, because all the singer does is whine about how ... well...

Quote:

Do you ever feel like breaking down?
Do you ever feel out of place?
Like somehow you just don't belong
And no one understands you
Do you ever wanna runaway?
Do you lock yourself in your room?
With the radio on turned up so loud
That no one hears you screaming

No you don't know what it's like
When nothing feels all right
You don't know what it's like
To be like me

Do you wanna be somebody else?
Are you sick of feeling so left out?
Are you desperate to find something more?
Before your life is over
Are you stuck inside a world you hate?
Are you sick of everyone around?
With their big fake smiles and stupid lies
While deep inside you're bleeding

No you don't know what it's like
When nothing feels all right
You don't know what it's like
To be like me

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like
Welcome to my life
Thats from the "Welcome To My Life" song. To me that is what makes them Emo. Plus the appearance of all the band members lol, but that has less to do with it.

ArtistInTheAmbulance 07-15-2005 07:13 AM

That is one of the worst songs ever written. I hate it so much. But its not emo. Its pop, with guitars and a drumkit. And black clothes.

EddyEdwards 07-17-2005 12:52 AM

Theres no punk sound to it at all its pop.

sijyb00 07-17-2005 03:39 PM

Thrice:

Since you voiced your opinion, I'd like to voice mine.

I don't agree with you on anything.
& I think Thrice is the most horrible band ever.

Now for the facts.
None of them bands are emo or punk.
They're all pop punk.

Emo doesn't stand for "emotional" music.
It was the name given to bands that played emotional "hardcore"
In no way are any of those bands hardcore, nor anything close to emocore/screamo.

Not to mention, emocore and screamo are both being classified wrong by the mainstream.

Btw, remember me, Thrice?

Am I gonna get banned now? Because you're a biased idiot with ignorant opinions of music.

Dude, I know what you're saying about emo is the truth but do you have to be so angry. You're just gonna get banned again.

ArtistInTheAmbulance 07-17-2005 04:15 PM

Over nothing aswel. Thrice hasnt even been here in ages, and probably wont come back for months, if he does ever. Just leave this guy be, he might not even do anything once he realises Thrice isnt here anymore. If he's got half a brain, anyway.
