It matters if the band was about not selling out and then they're all over MTV. When a band makes songs to get played on MTV, they have to change their sound in some way. Some bands that I like have changed their sound to reach more people and that doesn't bother me. It bothers me, when people discover a "new" band that actually has been around for a decade or more and don't realize that they have other albums.
I hate those people that only like the newer stuff over the older stuff. IMO, if you like a band, you should like just about everything by that band.

Clutch. This band was awesome back in '92 and '93. Then they changed their sound.
I haven't bought any of their albums since.

Why? Some great bands just make a crappy record, it happens. Doesn't mean the rest of their stuff sounds bad. I'm not going to judge Led Zeppelin from Coda when I, II, III, IV and Physical Graffiti all exist, and are incredible records.

Is this not contradictive?

Sure, when a band i like a lot gets a lot more attention, i'll admit it bugs me, but they're still a band I like, and as long as a band doesn't change their sound then I will always like them.

....how would you define a crappy band?

Hmmmmm, let's not get into an argument about people or whatever I'm talking music. Tell me what(not who), to you, is a crappy band?

last year i liked GC quite a bit, i would also like to know, because i want to hear what they sounded like before they went mainstream. The guys are always wearing band **** from like, wicked good bands, so before they went all MTV, were they any better?
