Big fan of Morrisey now, after catching his set at Reading last year. Didn't get the music so much when I'd heard it on CD but hearing it live was great. Its like the musical version of listening to a friend pour out all of their life woes in no particular order after one too many bottles of wine.

Almost expected him to have a song called "you're my bestest mate in the world and I love you and ImnotjustsayingthiscosImdrunkalthoughIamabitdrunk, do you know that? but I'm not ***, but I love you, ohmygodImsopished".

wholeheartedly agree. moz may be a bit of an arse but i think the poll was talking about voice so that's actually got nothing to do with it. where would music be today without the smiths?

Female: Polly Harvey for rocky stuff, Jenny Lewis or Cat Power for anything softer
Male: Rufus Wainwright, Jarvis ****er or whoever sings in the Hidden Cameras... that's beautiful melodic stuff there

The guy from the Violent Femmes has my favorite voice.

And the Decemberists are the best new Inde band.

To resume a 5 year old discussion, it definitely isn't J Mascis. I want to go with James Mercer, actually.

Purely based on vocal talent - Jeff Buckley, hands down. Cliche choice I know, but there's a reason it' so.
