I don't think he is a love/hate figure. I think he is a bad signer, but would happily listen to his voice all day.

When he was with Velvet Underground, I'd say the same!

And what was the big joke with someone comparing him to the singer from the Strokes? Just because they both slur their words isn't sufficient reason for that.
