It is very good, but I find Is This It to be better, as does most people it seems. Check it out if you haven't heard it yet!

i do, and i personally think it doesn't get enough credit... it just didn't match Is This It? in quality, but what honestly can these days?

At least 100 times better than Is This It.

I actually had an argument with this emo who insisted that Room On Fire was better than First Impressions of Earth, yet he couldn't iterate one reason why. I bought Room On Fire on vinyl hoping to get a kick out of it. It was listenable, but lacked any drive, almost keeping the formulaic nature of the first album but without the fun. Casablancas singing almost sounded like he was just trying to say the lyrics to just get the album done. First Impressions of Earth was as listenable as Is This It? mostly in that the emotion was conveyed. Really, its hard to like the Strokes when they were so glorified to fall so mightily and basically become a garden variety second tier indie band, but I can listen to First Impressions of Earth and it puts me in a good mood.

I wanted to punch said emo kid, but he was way high and may have not known what he was saying. But he really looked like he meant it and thought his opinion was OBVIOUSLY right. But I guess people get a lot of that in the whole indie hipster pretentious face-off.

My real problem with the strokes is that they never really had to work that hard coming from money, and so they never innovated their sound enough to be relevant. If they made it or not, their daddies would bail them out. They never paid their dues, and having friends who are trying to make it in the music world, I kind of want to tell them to go get on a yacht somewhere or get out there and bust your ass to make good music. Ya know, its like I love the music, but I think they are pretty fake as people. But even so, can't get over liking the music.

Good story! Regarding the 'emo' if i had the same attitude towards my friends musical tastes i probably wouldn't have any friends. I think there's far better reasons to punch someone than their opinions on Strokes albums but fair play i guess.
I can't say a band having money or not in the first place bothers me all that much. Is This It was a great debut, and they didn't add to their sound but then again a load of bands who are successful with their first album are guilty of this.
I have no idea what they're like as people, i'll take your word for it and say 'well thats NYC for you!'

isn't music not supposed to be about the money though? i think by coming from money, the band was able to create that sound on "Is This It" that no one had really heard before and didn't have to focus on how well it would sell

There are loads of bands out there who don't really focus on how much their music would sell, and instead make fresh interesting music. Is This It was good but it wasn't anything incredibly new.

oh it wasn't his opinion. it was his arrogance with no substance. and he wasn't my friend.

the money thing doesn't bother me. but I also don't think that Is This It? has a decidedly unique sound. In fact it sounds rather borrowed. I like it nonetheless. Then again, I don't think you actually responded to my post with anything but sarcastic contempt, not recognizing the lightness with which I wrote it. Some things get lost in translation though, right?
