I was the same way. My brother would recommend them to me but with the first couple of listens I couldn't really figure them out. I think after hearing him listen to them and enjoy them so much, I finally came around to it. Sounds a little strange but I would find myself humming along with him and them. And that's basically when it all changed for me.

Wincing The Night Away is probably my favorite though (I know I am in the minority on that one) but it just is.

Keep in there, you'll come around!

I started with Chutes Too Narrow and was pretty happy with that. I'm not sure what other people might think...

Hmm, they don't have many albums out do they? 3 or 4?
What's their sound like? I know they're an Alternative/Indie band, but I'm looking to find out more specifically.

Well, after listening to Chutes Too Narrow, I don't really know what I think. A lot of the melodies were nice enough, I expected the production to be more lo-fi but no big deal. The lyrics, I found them to be strange. They used a lot of imagery and weren't very literal, I find it hard to like the music when I don't understand what they're singing about. I find it quite strange how people can like music without understanding it, like a few chavs who listen to Arctic Monkeys. Arctic Monkeys lyrics are taking the piss out of chavs, yet they don't seem to grasp that.. So yeah, I'd like to understand the lyrics before I really made a judgement but it sounded like the potential had some nice melodies on it.

Wincing might be my favorite too, only because it's probably the most accessible and as you say, polished (which I love). I've had problems getting into Oh Inverted world, I liked New Slang right off the bat, but the rest took some time to get used to. I had a breakthrough at some point and have heard it so many times since that I can't really be objective as to its quality. They're still my most played band on last.fm, mostly due to Oh inverted world.

I'd say the two most known songs off of the album are "Caring Is Creepy" and "New Slang", right? With me however, it was quite the opposite, I was instantly drawn to "Caring Is Creepy". I can't explain the sound of the song but something about it just pulls me in and won't let go. The other songs took a little more time to get use to but have all grown on me. "Caring Is Creepy" is still my favorite song (by The Shins). I honestly don't tire of hearing it.

Commenting on another post I read about someone almost being agitated by the band for taking so long to release albums: I completely feel the same! On one hand, I can't stand the wait of waiting (that sounds a bit strange and funny) for the next album to drop yet on the other if time is what they need to produce quality records then so be it (although, I know James Mercer is being a selfish prick at the moment!). I just get frustrated from time to time.

No I'm sorry, I take it back, I'm just listening to Oh Inverted world and it's still insanely good and catchy.

Edit to avoid triple post: Also, I don't think there's a single song of theirs where I actually understand what the fuck they're singing about.

The Shins irritate the hell out of me.

Mainly because I love every single album they've done but they take so long to release a new one.

I'd imagine the next one will be out 2012, Mercer is taking a break until at least 2011 isn't he? Get back with the band in 2011 and the album should be out sometime 2012. I'd imagine that to be a life time to wait for someone whose followed The Shins from their first album.
