Echo And The Bunnymen

This great band don`t have a thread

So anyway , I`d rate this band as one of the most important British bands of the 80s alongside The Smiths & The Cure.Their influence is a lot bigger than most people seem to realise , there are a hell of a lot of indie bands over the last 15 years that name them as an influence (in fact Spiral Stairs of Pavement wrote the sleevenotes to their Crystal Days box set). They`re also one of the few bands to reform after a decade or so that still make good albums even now.

Oh and Ian McCulloch came out with my favourite ever quote about U2...

"Music for plumbers and bricklayers."

But that has nothing to do with me liking them you understand

I think they`re wonderful.

Mr Sensitive 03-08-2006 12:39 PM

I'm just getting into them, the Killing Moon is a great song.

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-08-2006 12:57 PM

I heard somewhere Frank Sinatra covered it

I would have loved to have heard that

admittedly, this is the only song i really, really like by them. but i do really, really like it.

IndiElectronica 03-08-2006 02:52 PM

Been a fan for 15 years. Liked their old stuff for 5 years and more or less forgot about them for 8 years then got 'What Are You Going to do With Your Life'. One of my perfect Sunday afternoon cd's. Seen them twice at glasto now. 2003was VERY good, but in 2005 i was pretty bored. Ran into his girlfriend 3 years ago at a party as well.

anyways - a great band that i'm very happy to have lasted this long.

cardboard adolescent 03-08-2006 03:39 PM

I actually got into them through Donnie Darko.

Ocean Rain = sex.

Their new(er) stuff isn't that great, though.

Laces Out Dan! 03-08-2006 05:23 PM

This band is really cool....i also got into them through Donnie Darko...and since then i've liked them....i also love the name of the band :)

Soundgardener 03-08-2006 06:34 PM

Donnie Darko seems to be the gateway drug to Echo and The Bunnymen.

They deserve better than to be associated with that heap of sh*te movie

^Are you Joking!

MURDER JUNKIE 03-08-2006 11:39 PM

I liked the tune they had on The Lost Boys soundtrack

Old skool bitches!!!

I disagree! It's different from their early stuff but still very good. Check out the song 'It's Alright' from Flowers.. great catchy tune

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-09-2006 11:04 AM

I have to admit I bought Flowers a few years ago not expecting much , but it`s a really good album.

Still not got around to getting Siberia yet:o:

IndiElectronica 03-09-2006 12:22 PM

lol - me either... will look out for it on the cheap at Fobb tho...

cardboard adolescent 03-09-2006 02:52 PM

I've only heard Evergreen so I might just be making a stupid, uninformed generalization.

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-09-2006 02:54 PM

I have to admit i`m not that hot on Evergreen , there`s probably 3 good songs on that album.

Mind you my copy came with a bonus disc of John Peel sessions so I can`t complain

hiu 03-09-2006 08:38 PM

I was waiting for my ban to finish just to post in this thread, I really enjoy Echo & The Bunnymen. I would go as far to say Ocean Rain is one of the finest album of 1984, and that's saying something because that was a darn good year for music.

IndiElectronica 03-10-2006 03:50 AM

i'd also agree that evergreen is pretty weak...

Shame really because Nothing Lasts Forever in my opinion is the best comeback single ever recorded.

i have that on vinyl..some good tunes on it and usually people recognize what it is as soon as they hear it.

Adora 03-13-2006 11:06 AM

I saw them at oxegen last year.
Love the band but gotta say they hella let me down.

IndiElectronica 03-13-2006 03:44 PM

Sinatra .....Killing Moon?!

Only in dreams...

swim 06-23-2006 08:56 AM

I started listening to them because I heard their People are Strange cover. Ocean Rain is easily my favorite. Great band.

WaspStar 06-30-2008 04:22 PM

Is it just me or is Crocodiles the greatest debut album ever released? Ocean Rain is probably the better album, but Crocodiles really rocks. The bass playing is out of this world.

Wham City 06-30-2008 10:03 PM

Like most everyone else Donnie Darko was where I first heard them. Donnie Darko introduced me to a bunch of 80's music actually. Echo and the Bunnymen definitely stand out as a favorite though.

Mr Sensitive 07-01-2008 06:39 AM

I have come to the conclusion that everyone should own Ocean Rain.

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-01-2008 11:19 AM

I'd put Ocean Rain below Crocodiles & Heaven Up Here myself.

Bunnymen albums in order of preference....

Heaven Up Here
Crocodiles
Ocean Rain
Porcupine
S/T

If there was justice in the world, Echo would be one of the world's biggest bands, U2 wouldn't have made it out of their hometown, and Ocean Rain would displace Sgt. Pepper from the top of all those incredibly biased "top ten albums" lists.

And am I the only one who wasn't introduced to Echo by DD (a film I've never seen?). I got into them accidentally when a track on a compilation a friend gave me was mislabeled as Pictures On My Wall, by Echo & The Bunnymen. I found a copy of Crocodiles and it was so f---ing good that I didn't care that the track wasn't the one on the mixtape.

almauro 07-01-2008 07:44 PM

Heaven Up Here is incrediable! The Bunnymen's 1st two releases are absolute dark edged gems, but Bono and U2 got all the good reviews, which caused the B-Men to lighten up and become more commercial. I think they started to slide on Porcupine.

DJ Phoenix 08-01-2008 01:58 AM

Any Echo & the Bunnymen fans here?

Love this band, and have been a fan for some time. I remember seeing them in like '88 in Detroit, they rocked. Anyone else out there a fan of them?

jackhammer 08-07-2008 04:48 PM

I remember buying 'Crocodiles' on cassette in the late 80's for about 50p. Well worth the time. I pitifully only have the comp 'Songs To Learn And Sing' these days.

cardboard adolescent 08-08-2008 08:25 PM

Me too, but that's a really good comp!

WWWP 08-08-2008 09:07 PM

Hmm, I'll have to check them out.

WaspStar 09-08-2008 04:27 AM

Is it blasphemous to suggest that Porcupine is actually superior to Heaven Up Here?

classylady 09-09-2008 12:00 PM

One of the Most Underrated Bands

...because they came out around the same time as influential bands like The Psychedelic Furs, Depeche Mode, Joy Division/New Order, The Cure, U2, and The Police. I mean seriously, they have some catchy tunes like The Killing Moon, The Cutter, and of course Lips Like Sugar. Thing is, what hardcore fans really enjoy listening to like Ocean Rain, Bring on the Dancing Horses, and Bedbugs and Ballyhoo

zekethefreak 09-10-2008 01:37 PM

Ah... Echo & The Bunnymen. I had the distinct pleasure of seeing them in 1984, on the Ocean Rain tour, featuring Billy Bragg (a then completely unknown one man show) and The Fleshtones. The show was in a rather gothic looking theater, on our local university campus. What an atmosphere. To me, Ocean Rain will always be my favorite, from the truly beautiful artwork, to the love atmosphere of the album. Plus, I was 17, and at an age where I really bonded with music. I think all their early work, up until the original quartet broke up, is by far the best. I have listened to the recent album, and although it is a nice listen, it borrows too much from the early work.

Anyhow, definitely a band worthy of a thread... even though their egos can definitely paint a less than glamorous image of the band.

DJ Phoenix 10-21-2008 02:49 AM

Any Echo& The Bunnymen fans here?

I loooooooooooooooooooooooooooveeeee this band so much(almost as much as the Smiths/DM/The Cure). They're right @ the top of my list of fantastic bands.

My favorite songs by them are:

The Cutter
Do it clean
Lips Like Sugar
The Killing Moon
Silver
My Kingdom
Crystal days
ocean rain
Pictures on my wall
Stars are stars
The puppet

too many others to name.......anyone else?

Zer0 10-21-2008 09:02 AM

Hell yeah :D
Ocean Rain and Heaven Up Here are such great albums.
My fav songs would be The Killing Moon, Ocean Rain and Bring On The Dancing Horses. Had a chance to see them at a festival during the summer but didnt just didnt happen grrrr, one of my many regrets.

WaspStar 10-21-2008 10:29 AM

Favorite songs? Wow, it's hard to pick just one from each album!

Stars Are Stars
Crocodiles
Pictures On My Wall
Simple Stuff
Do It Clean
With A Hip
All My Colours
The Cutter
Clay
Higher Hell
The Yo-Yo Man
Seven Seas
Ocean Rain
Angels & Devils
Satisfaction
The Game
Nothing Lasts Forever
Rust

And then they did some killer covers. In The Midnight Hour and the live version of She Cracked come to mind.
