Just read these lyrics:

Wanda had a baby in nineteen fifty one.
The father was stranger and a stranger was the son.
Call that child James Lewis, call these rooms a home.
Changing all them diapers polish all that chrome.
C'mon, baby, spend the night with me

All around the schoolyard playing all the games
Running, laughing back and forth the kid with two first names
Stranger in the closet, lock the diary
The past is running faster singing harmony
C'mon, baby, spend the night with me

"God bless this kitchen" said the knick-knack shelf
"The dinner's almost ready Go and wash yourself"
Jimmy's growing up now and Wanda's growing old
The time is growin' shorter the nights are long and cold
C'mon, baby, spend the night with me

Sneaking in the closet and through the diary
Now, don't you know all he saw was all there was to see
The whole town saw Jimmy on the six o'clock news
His brains were on the sidewalk and blood was on his shoes
C'mon, baby, spend the night with me
C'mon, baby, spend the night with me

Just listened to this on YouTube, wow :(

That last verse is so sad.

I find there's a difference between a song that's sad and a one that's absolutely miserable, so i'm not really sure what's wanted here. Still:

I Know It's Over by The Smiths is a brilliant sad tune. "And as i climb into an empty bed...oh well, enough said"
Suffer Little Children by The Smiths is deliciously haunting
Asleep has been mentioned here already (had to do it again, sorry Rickenbacker)
Dress Rehearsal Hag by Leonard Cohen is absolutely bloody miserable
Famous Blue Raincoat by Leonard Cohen has a sad feeling to it (it's freaking genius too)
Bullet Proof...I Wish I Was by Radiohead just has that full sound and great lyrics that can induce a coma
Exit Music (For A Film) by Radiohead just makes you want to scream out
Dagger by Slowdive is pretty sad
I always listen to The End by the Doors when i feel miserable, but i don't think it classifies as a "sad song" per se. It qualifies as bloody amazing tho, and that's enough for me.
The Great Gig In The Sky by Pink Floyd. Oh you've got to listen to this one...

And these are just out of the top of my head. I know some might not be indie, but comon, can you blame me? :)

I always thought Waisted Time, by Skid Row was sad. (Overdose on drugs..thats sad!) And there was a song in the 70s, caint remember by who, 'Sad Eyes'. That song was as sad as Bruce Springsteens vocals!
