TV On The Radio
sorry, i know there's a thread but it's a sonofabitch to track down...
anyways i'm listening to return to my cookie mountain and i think it's fantastic ( especially playhouses )...anyone heard it? is it supposed to be the new record? because i can't find it on amazon.com ( it says it's not released yet ) if so, can anyone compare it to the previous album? i haven't heard it... and what would be the difference between experimental rock and prog rock? |
Experiemental has a more atonal style, and more avant garde influences as oposed to prog, which often showcases a more classical, jazz or folk oriented sound... Though prog is also very avant garde based, as in the case of Can.
Prog overall has certain distinct influences, which can vary, depending on the artist, but many bands share a similar sound or approach (check the prog ed thread, for furher information), while experiemental rock dosen't exactly have any truly definable characteristics, experiemental music is simply any kind of band who are truly distinct from any currently known music form, so it's really more of a term for musicians that don't share characteristics of any conventional genre, rather than being an actual genre itself... However prog can be considered a type of experiemental rock, and many so called experiemental rock bands can fall into the prog category... Genres like post rock could fall into either category. |
"Playhouses" sounds nothing like them...I dunno if I can handle it.
Really? That's depressing... I'm seeing them soon and I was really looking forward to it. Please tell me their new stuff doesn't suck...
i like the new album better...
Yeah... but you're croatian..
Just kidding. What's different about it, exactly? |
it's just that one song, it's got a beat and it's sorta funky...the rest of the songs are pretty much like desperate youth...

Personally, I prefer their EP over the album, but I still like it a lot.
I really like the new album, playhouses has a new health rock feel to it, the rest sound like an improved version of desperate youth mainly due to the addition of a drummer who has been touring with them now for awhile but wasnt featured on desperate youth.
There`s a download for a 4 song session they did on Radio 1 a couple of months back here if anyone is interested featuring stuff off the new album.....

I havent given their latest album a listen yet even though I should. Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes is pretty sweet.
I heard a few songs by them. Not a fan, a bit too flat, and not really energetic either. Dare I even say dull...
Yeah, but that guitarists afro, woah!
I'm fairly certain "Blues down here" might be the best thing I've heard in the Indie world in a long long time.
Young Liars is one of my favorite E.P.es of the last five years, and RtCM is in my top five records last year. Sick band.
I dig TVOTR for their originality, and I think they can write some good music, but my problem with them is that it seems like, because they deviate so much from traditional chord theory, they often times don't know how to elaborate some of their songs to make them full compositions. They are a bit too creative for their own good at times. They'll have a very original and very cool sounding 4 chord progression, but, because it doesn't abide by traditional chord structure, it's difficult to put in a second part to the song. Then you get albums like Return To Cookie Mountain which is very creative and well produced, but it is dominated by songs that are comprised of the same 4 chords throughout the whole song, which can get irritatingly repititious. I like all of their songs individually. They're a nice break from the regular, but the irregularity paired with the repetition is a little much in large doses.

Wolf Like Me and Staring at the Sun are two of the best songs I discovered in the past year and a half.
TV on the radio is by far one of my favorite bands. Favorites of mine being Wolf Like Me, Staring At the Sun, Playhouses, and Let the Devil In.
They are fantastic. |
new album leaked.
Havent been given a chance to listen to it as of yet, but I have a two hour drive back to school ahead of me this afternoon, so that should give me a better opportunity. I'll give my word on the album later tonight. |
Where did you get it from, site wise?
TV on the Radio these days is the only band that matters. Check out young liars, I was a liar, and Blues from Down here as well. |
I've got Return to Cookie Mountain, which is a really good album. They've got a lot of creativity to em. If you go to their site and listen to Golden Age and Dancing Choose, it seems like their new album is gonna be more Hip Hoppy/Poppier than the aforementioned album.
Dear Science, is by far the best album of the year, and possibly the best album since Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I'm still in shock and can't fully comprehend this album yet, and I've been listening to it basically non-stop since 11:30 last nite.
'fro it up! :afro: |
I'm not even going to begin to compare this album to any of their previous efforts. Their best work is still from both RTCM and Young Liars, but this album definitely didnt dissapoint me. Favorites right now are "DLZ", "Stork and Owl", "Shout Me Out", and "Love Dog"... probably in that order too. Fantastic stuff, I'm so excited to see them next month!
Wolf Like Me is a good song.
Dear Science may just be the album of the decade.
I find it very pertinent to mention that they have a new album coming out this spring and it's called Nine Types of Light, and I am the most excited.
So everyone should listen to it and judge it like me! |
Any idea of a release date? They are one of the few bands I really think works at what they do.
No sure date yet, just Spring 2011--i'm sure they will announce the date soon. I'm just super happy their "hiatus" did not turn permanent.
Are the post-Dear Science side projects any good?
I just heard on the radio today, one of the guys from TVotR is going to do everything with Jane's Addiction except be in the band; Write, play, record, tour.
Seemed really weird but whatever. |

I'm quite interested to find out what prompted this. EDIT: Also do you know which one? I really hope it's not the lead singer--he seems way to opposite to do that. |
Ha, no. They DJ said "the....dude" so I'm not really sure. I just googled and found...
Jane's Addiction have been without a bassist since Duff McKagan left the group late summer to focus on the upcoming Loaded album, The Soundtrack. Well, they've found an unlikely replacement to help them complete their reunion album: TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek. Spinner confirmed the news late last night, adding that it appears that Sitek will only assist on the Jane's record and won't become a permanent member of the alt-rock group. Beyond playing bass, it appears that Sitek will also help write and produce the record, which still does not have a name and will be Jane's Addiction's first studio album in eight years. I didn't know they had Duff ever... |
I really like TV on the Radio. There last release was pretty sweet. I heard there getting a new album out this year, looking forward to that.
April 12 seems to be the release date for Nine Types of Light.

Seeing them in Croatia this summer! Woohoo!!
I remember liking Return to Cookie Mountain, so I'll probably pick up the rest of their material.
Can't wait for the new album! :> |
Listening to the new album. The standout seems to be New cannonball run. Fantastic rhythm.
I have to say for me they probably peaked with Return to cookie mountain. Dear Science had a couple of good tracks but I always find myself returning to RTCM and listening to it from start to finish. I've listened to Nine types of light a few times and apart from New cannonball run, I just don't hear anything nearly as exciting as pretty much any track on RTCM. They seem to be slowing down, the rythms seem much less exciting. :/
