Yo La Tengo

I love everything they've put out but I think Ride the Tiger is my favorite. They kick ass and my lack of writing skills doesn't do them justice.

IndiElectronica 08-18-2006 03:00 AM

certainly one of the most underappreciated indie bands ever imo. Been going for over 20 years and still very little people know who they are.. Have most their albums and seen them twice live, both very good shows!

Decoy 08-18-2006 04:44 AM

bought the box set when it came out, almost a year ago.

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-18-2006 05:04 AM

I have a couple of their albums.

I dunno about them though , I have this feeling with them that the ingredients are all there but theres something missing somewhere.

IndiElectronica 08-18-2006 08:43 AM

they do have a lot of 'samey' stuff, and some even boring... but they can be absolutly brilliant sometimes too :)

here's a pretty good example of their glory - Sugarcube - http://www.funtimeok.com/wp/go.php?h...-Sugarcube.mp3

here's another of my fav's live - Autumn Sweater - http://www.ezarchive.com/rbally/Albu...mn_Sweater.mp3

(the whole black session you can hear at
http://www.rbally.net/2006/06/yo-la-...s-1997_08.html)

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-18-2006 08:55 AM

I forgot to mention they also did the best cover of The Simpsons theme tune.

Even better than Sonic Youth`s effort

swim 11-09-2006 06:01 PM

I am not afraid of you and I will beat your ass is so good, one of the better releases this year. The album art is sexy too.

IndiElectronica 11-10-2006 03:27 AM

aye, tis pretty good. Very random and lots of influences and styles.

Seeing them tomorrow actually! Wee!!

swim 11-10-2006 06:13 PM

^How'd that work out?

White Lies 11-13-2006 04:15 PM

I saw them at a festival I was at in August, but I'd only heard a couple of their songs at the time.

Anyway, I downloaded Painful recently and it's a great album, full of nice lush songs. I'll need to get some more albums.

IndiElectronica 11-14-2006 03:24 AM

was quite a good show actually! the played the most 'normal' set i've every seen them... with only 2 songs where they weren't on their 'normal' instruments.

about 5 from their new album, most of the older ones you'd expect too. Tbh i was pretty tipsy tho and at the end was telling my friends i hoped they would play 'autumn summer' and they had to inform they played it already ... lol

IndiElectronica 11-14-2006 03:25 AM

oh... lastly.. it was at the Forum. do NOT go their unless you have your ticket in hand already. took over an hour to get in to collect my interenet tix, missed the opening act

effervescence 11-15-2006 04:25 AM

They're one of the bands Ive been meaning to get into more and more. Can anyone give me a good list of albums/tracks to get started on?

IndiElectronica 11-15-2006 05:09 AM

Albums to get for sure that i have and think are very good:
Painful
I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One
And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out
I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass

i'd also still recommend their best of 'Prisoners of Love: A Smattering of Scintillating Senescent Songs: 1985-2003'. It has a good representation of their music. I don't think it's a best-of myself.. but a good representation...

geek the girl 11-23-2006 04:35 PM

Ive just discovered them and like them alot!! :hphones:

Libquaker 11-30-2006 08:50 PM

My Pandora Sonic Youth channel keeps spitting these guys out, mostly Clunk. Sounds good so far, looking at some of the recommended. Very interesting stuff.

IndiElectronica 12-01-2006 04:52 AM

yeah... they have a lot of songs that are like sonic youth... others that are nice a light like Low... and lots in between ;)

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-09-2007 10:45 AM

I just downloaded a 15 album torrent.

If there is a missing ingredient with this band i`ll find it.

Timorous Vince 01-09-2007 10:57 AM

They are incredibly consistent.

cardboard adolescent 02-07-2007 09:38 AM

I saw them yesterday, and they were amazing. They're one of those bands that can manage to sell out a club, and then have 25% of the audience leave before the end of the set because of their abrasive noisiness. I swear, they played one mellow poppy song, then one upbeat noisy song. They played one song that was a fifteen minute long krautrock-ish epic with a steady bassline and drumbeat and with the guitarist completely freaking out and destroying his instrument, and one twenty minute long song that started barely audible and finished with an ocean of noise. Absolutely brilliant set.

Moon Pix 02-07-2007 11:41 AM

I Can Hear the Heart Beat As One is a great record. What I like about them is that the noise/pop ratio in their music is usually about 50/50.:)

jackhammer 02-15-2008 01:13 PM

I have had I'm Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass for some time and really liked it but was unsure where to go next, so today I bought the 2 CD comp-Prisoners Of Love. I am impressed. Very consistent. It is not usually what I go for but I can definitely say that I want more of this band. They deserve a wider fan base.

Seltzer 02-15-2008 04:21 PM

I was listening to And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out. I enjoyed it so I'm gonna grab some of their earlier stuff.

cardboard adolescent 02-15-2008 05:47 PM

Get I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One, it's probably their best.

That's fortunate because it's the one other YLT album I already have. Just haven't listened to it yet.

true

Painful is also up there, and they have lots of good stuff. Yo La Tengo rule.

/bump.

I have tried and tried... and tried to like Painful but I cannot wrap my head around it, all the songs sound the same to me.

On another note, I loved I Am Not Afraid Of You and I Will Beat Your Ass, there's alot of varation on it. It's my favorite right after I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One and And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out.

jackhammer 01-13-2009 12:43 PM

I have just got the rest of their discography and they constantly change their sound but still keep the asthetics. Awesome band.

swim 01-13-2009 01:40 PM

Has anyone heard "Yo La Tengo Is Murdering the Classics"? I have a hard time believing they did that all on the spot but it's still pretty cool.

Sneer 01-13-2009 01:47 PM

I've been meaning to check this lot out for too long, but something else comes along every time. I'll definately give them a look after i've finished my research on Menomena

I have'nt got around to it yet but i'm looking forward to it. 'You Shoot We Score' looks interesting too.

swim 12-20-2012 02:55 PM

New album is on par for them. Chill as fuck. I saw them live at a musical festival. One where you go from venue to venue. I think it was day 2 or 3, I was exhausted, sat down in a nice comfy chair and just closed my eyes, it was dope.

Zer0 12-20-2012 03:02 PM

I heard the album leaked alright, will give it a listen as soon as I track down a DL.

I'm seeing them in March and I'm pretty stoked about it. I've never seen them live before.

theangrywhale 04-27-2013 07:12 PM

Yo La Tengo reminds me of working at the cd store...

TheBig3 11-07-2022 05:12 PM

Came across this one today on a list. I've never really listened to Yo La Tengo before. This isn't mind blowing but it's pretty good.

WWWP 11-07-2022 09:18 PM

Bro you’re missing out. I’m making you a YLT playlist stat
