i agree trashing it would be really wrong! but I understand why some people have a hard time "getting" it.
i've met very few people who actually gives elliott a chance when i recommend it - so i haven't had that discussion with anyone yet :b

which album is your favorite?

I'd have to go with Either/Or just because there is something about the song "Alameda" that gets me every time. Roman Candle and his s/t are talked up a lot, and those are classics as well...but I find myself going back to Either/Or a lot more.

i'm confused right now.. it's so easy to say " this is my favorite album" but right now i'm looking at the tracklisting to either/or and that cd has some of my favorite songs on it and the ones that i started out listening to. i think i have to retract what i've said so far and just conclude that it's almost impossible for me to choose a favorite

i have that with a few songs as well, that there's just something about them that i can't really explain, but makes them a little more special than the rest.

I know exactly what you mean. There are quite a few artists where I have this problem. If you like Elliott Smith, you should check out Sparklehorse (if you haven't already). I just recently got into him with the album "It's a Wonderful Life". It isn't completely acoustic like a lot of Elliott's stuff, but they have a similar passion in the way they sing.

it's been one of those things i've been meaning to listen to but never really gotten around to! but i will now.

if you have any more recommendations it would be wonderful, because it is, like you say, the passion, intensity and honesty that attracted me to elliott smith so if you know more of that, it would be great

Surely...if we are sticking to the folksy pop music then check out Sufjan Stevens, Andrew Bird, and Iron and Wine. That should get you started

I acquired a remastered version of Roman Candle on vinyl the other day. Sometimes I wish labels would just let the originals be. By cleaning up the vocals and acoustics the album loses what makes it a great album in the first place - namely the intimacy, rawness and urgency.

eh, i like the no names and condor ave a little better remastered

but for last call and roman candle i agree with you---they sound better in their original form

i just retro-fitted my own little roman candle mashup on a cd--so i get the best of both!
