The John Peel Festive 50 Tribute Thread
 

As there are 50 days till Christmas (I was gonna do this a couple of days ago & forgot .... humour me OK?).I got thinking how to celebrate this year in music.

As the great man is no longer around to give us his festive 50 I thought we should make up our own.

It`s perfectly simple , just upload a song from this year that you love & say a little about it.

Hopefully by Christmas we`ll have a wide range of the best stuff of the year from all different genres , and at the same time do the great mans memory proud.

Easy.

50. Jarvis Cocker - C*nts Are Still Running the World.

A wonderful song originally posted on Jarvis`s myspace site a few months ago to let people know he`s back from the dead.Included on his new album Jarvis as a hidden bonus track.This track shows that Jarvis has lost none of the gritty reality that made his lyrics in Pulp a joy to listen to.

There is a lot of emotion and energy in this song. Every time I hear this song it unlocks a mood which I don't get in a lot. The band plays so well together and creates such a great atmosphere. It can be listened to however you're feeling.

In true John Peel style I'm going to champion a brand new, little known band...Exile Parade and their double A-Sided debut single;

Described as taking the best of the Verve, Queens Of The Stone Age and Oasis and channeled into one feral whole.
All being fair, Exile Parade are set to burst onto the scene over the coming months.
I think this band has what it takes.

47. Sonic Youth- Pink Steam

One of my most overlooked songs on the new album on first listening, but it has really grown on me. Classic SY guitar and it appears to be an intrumental until late on in the song when Thurston starts singing. Sits nicely with other classic songs in their back catalogue, well worth the listen.

Possibly my favourite band discovery of 2006 covering one of my favourite David Bowie songs on their farewell E.P. Obviously I had to include this one.
