Daniel Johnston

I should've heard of this guy way before than a week ago but to make up for lost time I've been listening to a lot lately. He's a singer-songwriter but I'm not really sure if I'd go on about that for too long. I mean he's not a great musician. But he's fun! A lot of fun. Simple, obnoxious, weird. You know what music should always be about. It's not hard to believe that him and Violent Femmes are contempararies. They're not really similar but I hear the where it sounds pretty clear to me that they influenced each other. I'm certain that he lost a bunch of demos and John Darnielle found them and polished them up and spent 15 years rehashing it in a beautiful way.

sleepy jack 01-15-2007 03:41 PM

Hes sick, I <3 him.

Timorous Vince 01-15-2007 05:47 PM

He's awesome. M. Ward's cover of "To Go Home" is incredible.

Soundgardener 01-19-2007 11:53 PM

I need to get some of his music on recording.

swim 01-20-2007 06:21 AM

Someone needs to find and up, The Late, Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered Covered

cardboard adolescent 01-20-2007 11:31 AM

I have one of his CD's with Jad Fair.

sleepy jack 04-03-2007 05:16 PM

Conor was so influenced by him in his early days, listening to Water, Special Treatment, A Collection of Songs and some of the stuff on Letting Off The Happiness. I just wanted to point that out.

I love Johnston so much. I can upload Fear Yourself if anyone wants it.

swim 04-03-2007 05:57 PM

yea up that and I can up yip jump music

bloodorflies 04-04-2007 06:00 PM

I saw that the other day on one of those indy-ish movie channels and it is really good. I knew that he was a tad different, but I never thought that he would be like that.

Larkrise 07-26-2007 04:07 PM

He makes some interesting music videos as well,

YouTube - "Devinare", by Daniel Johnston

YouTube - Daniel Johnston - True Love Will Find You In The End

YouTube - "Grievances" by Daniel Johnston

You tube also has some good interviews with him as well, lol. Check them out.

I like how you say Conor, like we all know him by his first name 'cause he's so famous.
(Yes I do know who he is)

sleepy jack 07-26-2007 11:16 PM

Yeah well usually its spelt Connor so the one N set it apart and since I hype Bright Eyes so much its not like theres any other Conor I refer to. But thank you for pointing that out, really necessary.

I know it's not important, sorry, I just like having a friendly dig.:thumb:
Will you still be my friend?

sleepy jack 07-26-2007 11:23 PM

Of course, /insert childrens show theme song here.

IndiElectronica 07-31-2007 05:08 PM

he was GREAT at atp.. got on stage with Yo La Tengo and did 'Shiny Motorcycle'. This was 6 months ago and the song is STILL IN MY HEAD!!!

mozartv 08-01-2007 02:17 PM

The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a documentary about him. I saw it and was really impressed.

IndiElectronica 08-01-2007 06:15 PM

yeah - i was offered free tix to see it... i should have taken them :(

sleepy jack 05-19-2008 07:45 PM

Daniel Johnston refused to sign to Elektra because he thought (and very rightly so) Metallica were the spawns of the devil. My hero.

GravitySlips 05-20-2008 05:38 AM

^ what an excellent man

he's playing live here in July, gonna go see him. I've not heard much of his work yet though.

Lizzie 05-20-2008 04:40 PM

My favorite man ever, seriously, I was so upset that his show here was 19+, I would have loved to see him live

twinkeefactory 05-20-2008 09:57 PM

I saw him play a couple years ago even though I didn't know who he was. He's simple but mindblowing. Completely memorable. I've been a fan ever since. He passed through town a couple weeks ago and I missed it. :(

I really need to see the documentary about him.

pheurton 05-21-2008 03:35 AM

I want to see the doc too, I'm surprised it's not online =d
or maybe I haven't been looking hard enough.

sl1ck 05-21-2008 09:42 AM

I like Daniel Johnston, haven't been listening to him all that long though. I am going to be seeing him live next month though, I'm pretty excited.

He's almost awkward, like he might have a meltdown on stage or something, but then when he plays it goes away and you can't help but want to give the guy a hug.

pheurton 05-23-2008 04:38 PM

Just watched the devil and daniel johnston, a little saddening.

TockTockTock 03-19-2013 12:53 AM

Figured I would bump the thread of one of my favorite singer-songwriters of all time.

To start things up, here's a wonderful song that I effortlessly connect with and love. It's from Don't Be Scared (1982)... a personal favorite of mine.

katsy 03-19-2013 08:46 AM

^^ I recently watched The Devil and Daniel Johnston. I remember the video/song above and it is good stuff.
Very depressing material, but without his mental illness I doubt he would have been the artist he was/is. (I'm not sure what he is up t these days)****ty guitar player, but it worked with what he had going on. I really enjoy him.

Bane of your existence 03-19-2013 08:09 PM

This one's my favorite, save the fact that it depresses the **** out of me.

Some of his old music was featured in a film that just premiered at SXSW. I think he was also scheduled to play a set of his own music but I'm not sure if he did.

Also, I wouldn't say that he's a shitty guitarist - he just chooses to play that way. In any case, here's something he did a couple years ago.

OccultHawk 11-19-2014 11:00 AM

I just heard his song, his version, True Love Will Find You in the End, in a Firestone truck commercial. I hope he got a good pay check. He deserves to make money. I guess it's just selfishness but it makes me feel even sadder than I did already. Sorry, Daniel. I don't hold it against you if you read this. I don't have any right to say.

Engine 11-27-2014 12:23 AM

He's not reading this.

OccultHawk 11-27-2014 12:54 AM

Maybe he's a self-googler.

RoxyRollah 11-27-2014 05:31 AM

Dude he is so out of his tree, the words internet, and google mean nothing to him....

Now FUNERAL HOME...well completely different story.

OccultHawk 03-05-2016 05:04 PM

I encourage fans of Daniel Johnston to listen to a record called Gentle Peace by Roger Lee Hall.

Cloudless Cloud 05-14-2016 01:17 AM

daniel johnston is one of my favorites, did anybody see him live?

RoxyRollah 05-14-2016 03:58 AM

Only the follks at the puzzle factory.

Shadou Dan 07-17-2016 01:25 PM

I found out about Daniel Johnston several years ago, when a friend told me about his documentary and mentioned his proposed Mountain Dew commercial that he made while institutionalized. It's too bad the TV networks turned it down, I highly recommend looking for it on YouTube.

Black Francis 07-17-2016 04:45 PM

Daniel Johnston is a weird artist. The stuff he recorded on his ****ty tape recorder at home sounds alot better than his studio stuff. He sounded like an artist who had alot of unfulfilled potential but when he tried to fulfill that potential on a professional level it wasn't the same, something was lost along the way.

OccultHawk 07-17-2016 06:54 PM
