One of my favorite bands, for sure.

One of mine also, although 'cryptograms' and 'microcastle' are two different types of albums, i like the progress that they've made. It's hard to compare two albums that i really like from a band i really like but I would have to say that 'cryptograms' hit me harder than 'microcastle'. I would check that out first if i was a new listener.

recommending people to listen to cryptograms first is such a bad idea. cryptograms is...difficult.

Agreed, I actually found "Microcastle" more accessible then "Cryptograms".

An albums accessibility is all dependent on what the listener finds accessible. Depending on what type of music they enjoy either album could make them a fan or turn them away. Cryptograms may be more experimental album but it's great and it's Deerhunter. The second half of the album sounds more like Microcastle, but the first 7 songs of cryptograms are awesome IMO. Like a little 30 minute musical journey. I find both albums to be great though. :)
