Deerhunter
Did a search & came up with nothing.
Their Cryptograms album is tipped for big things in 2007 and i`m enjoying it a lot. So how can I convince you to check them out? I know , i`ll copy & paste some of the sh*t reveiws they`ve had that they posted on their myspace site....... Quote:

Haven't heard of Deerhunter....seem a little similar to Deerhoof however.
|
Seems a little similar to Deerhoof? You mean, the name? Of what possible significance could that be?
Anyway, yeah, this Deerhunter album rocks. They've actually had a plethora of highly positive critical reviews, not so hard to find (only way I heard about them in the first place). I'll link to a few, if anybody's interested: Deerhunter: Cryptograms: Pitchfork Record Review Deerhunter . Cryptograms [prefixmag review] Tiny Mix Tapes Reviews: Deerhunter - Cryptograms |
This shit is so drab. I do not like it.
|
The only reason I heard about this band was because I subscribed to an EqualVision email list so I would be up to date on The Fall of Troy and Dustin Kensrue releases. Then they kept seending me stuff about this band and I checked them out.... and I wasn't too impressed. It was a fine for a listen, but I wouldn't buy an album. It becomes trite after about 5 songs.
|
Not to be confused with The Dear Hunter *shudder*
Anyway is alright. |
good film as well :)
|
Can someone up Cryptograms?

not sure if thats the whole thing or not, borrowed link. lol link text |
Only thing that's actually grabbed me and not let go so far this year. Lead singer looks like he could give decent head too.
|
Can anyone up the album perchance? I'm sure to hate it but I'd like to give it a go anyway...:|

It's MUCH poppier. It really depends on why you hated Deerhunter in the first place. If you found them boring and too ambient, and have a taste for shoegaze, Microcastle/Wierd Era Cont. will probably give you a 360 degree change of opinion on them.
|
I've given "Cryptograms" a few listens and I still find it to be rather dull. I can't exactly say why but, it doesn't really stand out I guess.

Deerhunter are okay, I guess. I haven't really listened to anything that's convinced me that they're worthwhile. Pitchfork loves the hell out of them, though. But then again, Pitchfork loves The Hold Steady. |

Deerhunter are actually my favorite band right now. A title I've only held for 9-10 other bands in my lifetime. |
I've given Microcastle a listen and I while it's definitely more accessible than Cryptograms (which I've also downloaded and recently re-listened to) it's not striking me as anything particularly special. I suck at comparing stuff, but isn't this kinda what Belle and Sebastian have been doing for eons? It's lo-fi-ye and I'm not a fan of the genre.....but as with everything, it's early days and I have a tendency to radically change my opinion.

I came.

One of my favorite bands, for sure.
|
One of mine also, although 'cryptograms' and 'microcastle' are two different types of albums, i like the progress that they've made. It's hard to compare two albums that i really like from a band i really like but I would have to say that 'cryptograms' hit me harder than 'microcastle'. I would check that out first if i was a new listener.
|
recommending people to listen to cryptograms first is such a bad idea. cryptograms is...difficult.
|
Agreed, I actually found "Microcastle" more accessible then "Cryptograms".
|
An albums accessibility is all dependent on what the listener finds accessible. Depending on what type of music they enjoy either album could make them a fan or turn them away. Cryptograms may be more experimental album but it's great and it's Deerhunter. The second half of the album sounds more like Microcastle, but the first 7 songs of cryptograms are awesome IMO. Like a little 30 minute musical journey. I find both albums to be great though. :)
|
and most people would find cryptograms not accessible at all
|
I found "Microcastle" very pleasant to listen to. It's certainly not crowd-pleasing stuff, and so I can imagine why their live performances are maligned in the way that they are. If you prefer razzle-dazzle and !PERSONALITY! (in the capitalised sense) in your music, it's probably best to look elsewhere. In fact, I would imagine that the critical hype that surrounds this band was bound to diminish in the public realm since for the most part the listening public prefer their music to be laden with razzle-dazzle and !PERSONALITY!, when this band really isn't about that, IMO.
|
the public likes good music.
and i dunno wtf "razzle-dazzle and !PERSONALITY!" is |

I agree with the one who said that Cryptograms is NOT the place to start with Deerhunter. More like Fluorescent Grey EP or Microcastle. The former is probably even more accessible than the latter. Great stuff. |

I suppose I was merely responding to the negative response to this band, and there is a lot of it out there, which I can't fathom since I can't hear anything wrong with it. While I can understand that it isn't for everyone, it seems that even indie fans are calling this band overhyped, awful, dreadful, etc., when I can't see how one's response to this band could possibly be vitriolic and negative. Perhaps indifferent, since no form of music can possibly please everyone, but not absolutely vitriolic. Is this response a result of the lead singer's persona? Even if they've been almost universally lauded by critics, this doesn't mean that they've achieved any kind of real prominence out there: I'm sure that most people on the street will not have heard of them. (Or is it the case that critics heap praise upon a particularly obscure, inaccessible band in order to be trend setters while absenting themselves from the realm of music that real people enjoy? In which case I maintain that even though Deerhunter has not achieved mainstream prominence, the music on Microcastle is, to my ears, "accessible".)

Exactly why it's so frustrating when people call underground bands 'overhyped'- as much as every blog on the web might be talking about a certain band, chances are only like 3% of the population has even heard of them. Oh and by the way, anyone hear the new tracks from Deerhunter's new EP, "Rainwater Cassette Exchange"? The title track is excellent, and the demos I've heard of 'Dissapearing Ink' and 'Game of Diamonds' are excellent as well, although I haven't heard the versions that are to be released. |
ooo can you pm me possibly?
|
Deerhunter are most definitely one of my favorite bands around today. I didn't care much for Cryptograms that first time I heard it. I didn't dislike it but had no effect on me at all so I completely forgot about them. Then I heard Microcastle/Weird Era Cont. and I absolutely loved it so I went back and heard Cryptograms and enjoyed it much more. And the new Rainwater Cassette Exchange is wonderful.
|
There are some interesting songs on the album's accompanying disk Weird Era Cont.: my favourite of the moment is "Vox Humana". I listen to it on repeat lately.
