The Decemberists

Any takers?

I know their fanbase is no longer just northwest like it used to be, but I'm curious to know just how widespread they are.

hookers with machineguns 05-19-2005 09:38 AM

Good band, definitely has a widespread fanbase beyond the northwest. "Shanty for the Arethusa" and "Los Angeles I'm Yours" are two examples of very good songs.

They're in the middle of touring this month, so check out the website to see if they will be in your neck uv da woods.

I actaully caught Colin Meloy solo at a Wordstock event last month,
he was pretty amazing.

Have you heard their new album?

hookers with machineguns 05-22-2005 10:09 AM

No I havent, although I've heard good things about it.

I'm still pissed that I missed their show :(

Sweet Jane 05-24-2005 04:40 AM

I like them and I'm from Scotland, a few of my friends like them too. I wouldn't say they're well known here though, I only heard of them from an American guy, and passed the cd onto my friends. They did play in my local pub in Glasgow once but I missed it (The Delgados were playing somewhere else the same night - tough choice) it's only a small venue and didn't sell out or anything, but you know, they still made it over here. Hope they come back.

Squee 05-24-2005 05:28 PM

I'm terribly excited for them and Death Cab for Cutie in August. =3

They've definitely gotten bigger.

Yeah it's definitely worth checking out -
If you're a fan of Her Majesty the Decemberists you definitely won't be dissapointed --There's plenty of accordian to go around.

And I missed the show they had here a couple of months ago too,
which kind of kills me.

Edit:: I've seen DeathCab Twice now - and even though they have hardly anything In common with the Decemberists I'm sure that'll be an amazing show. They're playing here in august with the Violent Femmes, which I'm needless to say extremely excited about.

WeluvTwinkie 07-19-2005 07:12 PM

Their new album, Picaresque is really good. One of the best of 2005 so far...But I'm still waiting for The Flaming Lips' At War With the Mystics, so...We'll see.

hookers with machineguns 08-05-2005 09:57 PM

I had to bring this thread back to express my fondness for the new album. I most certainly agree, my pick for best album this year so far. I never thought I'd say the words 'pirate' and 'folk' in the same sentence, but that's exactly how I describe Picaresque.

Good songs- Sixteen Military Wives, The Mariners Revenge Song, From My Own true Love, The Infanta. All make my list this year.

angelinaballerina 08-12-2005 12:37 AM

ah! the decemberists. EFFING love the new album. saw them at fine line in minneapolis and then again in fargo, nd the next night. weird circumstances actually. minneapolis was a sold out show, and fargo was a pay-at-the-door. picaresque is amazing though. the mariner's revenge song is notable, but so is we both go down together. i was super addicted to that song for almost two weeks. sad, i know. but it's such a great song.

"meet me on my vast veranda, my sweet untouched miranda,
and while the seagulls are crying, we fall but our souls are flying..."

*sigh*
:)

Decemberists

Ok, it is 3 in the morning and I just finished the Decemberists album "Picaresque". This is my third time listening to it, and i've always considered myself a fan of the Decemberists. But for some reason this time I listened to it , it really stuck. Its a huge step up from their other work in terms of conceptual writing and overal sound. Just want to see what anyone else out there thinks of this album compared to their others.

franscar 11-28-2005 08:25 AM

It's the only one of their albums I've listened to, and I dunno, his voice grates on me a little. It's a decent record, just not something I'd praise too highly.

jellybean 11-28-2005 12:04 PM

I have "Her Majesty, The Decemberists" and it's amazing. Great music for lyrics fanatics.

idowhatiamtold 11-28-2005 01:50 PM

my gf listens to then non-stop... they are better in much smaller doses than I am used to, lol.

hookers with machineguns 11-28-2005 02:39 PM

It's an acquired taste. The sea shanty stuff is kinda peculiar to say the least. I want to read up on exactly where they're coming from with all that.

The new album is quite a treat, definitely one of my favorite releases this year. If nothing else, check out "The Mariner's Revenge Song" off of it.

Expletive Deleted 11-28-2005 03:37 PM

Definitely their best album, though they still haven't topped "Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect" song-wise.

cardboard adolescent 11-28-2005 03:40 PM

I've downloaded some of their stuff and liked it, and I just borrowed three of their CDs from a friend at school, so I'm about to give them a listen.

PopIsDead 11-29-2005 03:44 PM

I'd have to say that I rather enjoy the Decemberists. I've only heard four songs by them, but those four songs are really quite splendid.

cardboard adolescent 11-29-2005 05:49 PM

The Tain is awesome.

IndiElectronica 11-30-2005 09:23 AM

i'm more a fan of their older stuff... but listening to the new album when i came across this thread ;)

EDGE 02-18-2006 06:29 PM

appreciatedddd.

sleepy jack 02-18-2006 06:35 PM

They're like one of 10 bands i've seen in the indie forum I really like.

swim 04-25-2006 03:01 PM

bump.
I love the decemberists. Her majesty is my favorite but I think everything they do is great.

adidasss 04-25-2006 04:56 PM

Decoy 05-10-2006 07:11 PM

They have been growing on me as of late, but I must say that the "Human Behavior" cover I heard was terrible.

Of Angels and Angles 05-20-2006 08:12 PM

The Decemberists are amazing. Sorry for bringing this back, but I felt I needed to say something.

Listening to them right now actually.

IndiElectronica 05-20-2006 08:34 PM

i just got back from seeing them live. VERY enjoyable concert and if you get a chance to see them live do so!

Expletive Deleted 08-16-2006 01:47 PM

The Decemberists

It leaked.

Thoughts? I've heard a lot of people say that it's so "different" from their other stuff (I can't wait until someone accuses them of selling out!), but I don't really see that. If you heard The Tain EP you know what I'm talking about when I see that this seems to be a natural progression for them. I was actually surprised that Picaresque wasn't more like this one. In fact, I was listening to it this morning, and it really hit me that "The Island blah blah" reminds me a LOT of The Tain. Maybe it's because I haven't actually listened to it in a while, but the song structure and anything really reminds me of it. The rest of the album is pretty Decemberesque, except for "The Perfect Crime 2" which seems like a bit of a fluke. Kind of like when Belle & Sebastian wrote "Your Cover's Blown." In fact, that's pretty much all that song reminds me of, and that's probably why I like it so much. Anyway, I'm liking about half the songs on this album, and "meh" about the other half.

adidasss 08-16-2006 02:16 PM

Sorry, didn't upload that myself.

Scroll down to the bottom and click the button that says "Free," you'll go into a page that has a countdown telling you to wait for your download. Once the countdown stops input the letter/number combination that appears in the box and click "Download."
