Joy Division did'nt influence the rave scene but New Order who rose from JD's ashes certainly did influence rave and Manchester based music re dance beats being used into a guitar based template. So this gave rise to bands such as Spacemonkeys and Happy Mondays etc.

Joy Division influenced the Post Punk era a lot more with their potent atmosphere and brooding lyrics.

Our fellow Mancunian Right-Track could add a better explanation possibly.

I personally prefer "Unknown Pleasures" although the "Peel Sessions" had a close place in my heart for many a years. "Closer" did have quite a bit of feeling, but I still have to go with the other two.

Been listening to them a lot again lately and can't decide. At the moment I'm really lovin ''A Means to an End'' and ''Atrocity Exhibition''.

Day Of The Lords has always done it for me. When he bellows out 'When will it end' for the last time it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

No, it was not...and I have that EP. It was darker, MUCH darker than most things of that time period. Not "punk" in any way.

LOTS of wonderful bands from the genre(mostly pre 1992) that are excellent, and fun to listen to. Some of the bands today could learn a thing or 2 from these goth bands of yesteryear?
