From Emo to indie
 

I mostly listen to emo bands, but I'm willing to give this indie thing a try. Can anyone tell me a couple of songs to sample by some artists? I'm a fan of Joan of Arc and I'm getting into Xiu Xiu.

maybe if you ever got outside of FYE or just the mall in general, you wouldnt be so out of the loop.

First of all list the bands you listen to, and try not to get too offended because if you don't know indie chances are you do listen mostly to mainstream music.

well she could listen to like old school rap which isnt mainstream.. or maybe even jazz. well who know sdgl'dkfhgklhghkl nevermind.

lol. I dont mean to be mean, it's just a funny remark. really there are lots of ways to look at it, and its definition is pretty debatable, as are all musical genres these days. Generally its a word that describes the sound of a band that is independant or on an independant label.

Personally, being from Ontario I'm exposed to alot of Toronto Indie stuff. Not so much just soft indie. Broken Social Scene and all the bands related to it, such as Stars, Metric, and Do Make Say Think are pretty damn good. Aswell as the Constantines, my favourite. Almost all of the music I listen to could be described as Indie so its hard to say.

I mainly listen to old school rap and classic rock.(ever heard of that?) I dont listen to any stupid sh** on the radio or watch MTV or any of that crap.

well.. you seem to criticize me on my musical tastes and i guarantee that you have not ever heard even one band that i listen to.

ohh yeah and news flash... if you turn on the radio, 35 percent of the stations are classic rock... about 75 are rap (i dont consider any style of rap "old school" seeing as how the whole genre isnt very old compared to other styles of real music). i think there is normally 1 jazz station that i get if i am standing in the right position, and if i am about 45 miles away on weeknights from 7-8 i can catch some indie and hardcore music ran through a college radio station.

so trust me, just because you have the best of Van Halen, that doesnt make you some authority on music.

Listen kid...I never said I knew everything about and every type of music. Its my opinion. Obviously you do not know the meaning of the word so....go back to school. I dont care how many stations of classic rock or rap there is. The point is I dont listen to it and I highly doubt anything I listen to is on there.
So Zealious: If its not indie its mainstream? Is that how it is these days? Interesting. You children amaze me. You have no idea what 'good' music really is. :rofl:

before you go tell people what good music is... tell me, have you even heard one of the bands i have mentioned? and dont tell me its because this is all "new school" and your all "old school" or whatever line of bull **** that is.. bands like Antioch Arrow and youth of today were playing amazing music when even you (yes even you) were still in your diapers.

so if you categorize children by their ignorance of music... i must ask, wouldnt that make you the newborn?

and as far as maturity level goes.. if thats why you are calling us kids, i would have to say that would be unfounded. you say no one listens to good music, yet you havent even explored any of the genres of the people you are arguing with. how can you say the music you enjoy is better than the music i enjoy when you havent even heard one band?
