Essential Trip-Hop albums

So I love psychedelic rock, and quality hip-hop, so the idea of psychedelic trip-hop intrigues me, but I don't know where to start. Any suggestions by fans of the genre?

Mezzanine.

Very first album that came to mind.

Also anything by Portishead.

jackhammer 11-29-2007 12:47 PM

Sneaker Pimps-Becoming X (quite heavy in parts though).
Tricky-Maxinquaye.
Nicorette-Eternal Premiere.
Lamb-Fear of Fours.

djchameleon 12-02-2007 05:59 AM

Portishead was the first one that came to mind for me. I don't really know of any others though.

Gates_of_Iscariot 12-10-2007 08:30 AM

Massive Attack

riseagainstrocks 12-10-2007 02:12 PM

More "Artist - Album", less "Artist".

Portishead - Dummy

i look forward to their new album in 2008

jackhammer 12-10-2007 03:54 PM

Portishead have been mentioned three times and Massive Attack twice, anyone got any others? I mentioned four and I am always on the look out for some good trip hop. I have been hearing a few things about Alpha but I have'nt checked them out yet.

How about Everything But The Girl? Are they considered trip-hop? Just a little?

Only their last two albums had major electronic themes (and I happen to love both). Their early stuff was more twee pop/indie.

Emiliana Torrini's first album love in the time of science was very trip hop

i like her latest album better though

jackhammer 12-18-2007 11:53 AM

Thread moved to the more apt Electronica forum.

Terranova-Close The Door is an erratic album but there are a couple of decent tracks.

I don't think trip-hop tends to be linked so much to hip-hop. it doesn't sound like hip-hop music at all, least not in my conception of what hiphop is. not in my experience, anyway. trip hop is more like downtempo electronica music.

Trip Hop initially referred to laid back raps over jazz/funk/soul beats. Usually collaborations between bands. It is down tempo, but if there is no rap then it is merely ambient/chillout/downtempo.

Gates_of_Iscariot 12-18-2007 07:43 PM

I love trip hop, though i can't really think of anything besides damn massive attack

O'Bannion 12-19-2007 07:42 AM

Speaking of Mezzanine, Inertia Creeps has been on heavy rotation in my car lately.

One of the greatest beats I've ever heard.

Friday 12-19-2007 12:09 PM

I think people are struggling to find more artists because of the general size of the Trip Hop scene. It was relatively small, though it has had a wide influence.

I expect a revival in the next ten years really.

Vulphus 12-19-2007 01:36 PM

Anything Portishead (already mentioned I know but it really is that important). Massive Attack....duhh. Maxinquaye....duhh. And certain bits of Aphex but really, Portishead is the place to start.

PsychosisD 12-21-2007 02:46 PM

DJ Shadow
DJ Kush
BassNectar

DJ SHADOW is unclassifiable.
Bass nectar-unknown to me.
Nightmares On Wax are NOT trip hop. Ambient jazz breaks.
UNKLE is hard assed electronica no matter how u listen to it.

PsychosisD 12-22-2007 11:19 AM

woah, got my ass kicked.
I disagree with DJ Shadow being unclassifiable tho, he's definitely trip hop to me. Down tempo groove with a heavy hip hop influence and lots of sampling.

You should check out BassNectar, although you'll probably find that they don't classify as TripHop either.

UNKLE is coming to the Big Day Out so I might check them out.

Have you heard Ulver's Perdition City? It seems to be a mixture of electronica/trip-hop/whatever. I don't listen to enough of that style to know if it would be considered typical for the genre, but I like it. Funny that they used to be a black metal band.

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-22-2007 05:32 PM

UNKLE have never really been the same since DJ Shadow quit.

On the other hand he's never been as good since he left UNKLE either.

Ulver have been popping up all over these forums. The only one I have is A QUICK FIX OF MELANCHOLY which did nothing for me, but I have heard that this band jump genres. However they have to be good at any particular genre they are doing and not genre hopping for the sake of it. i'm going to dig deeper with this band and try to get an overall picture of them.

Yeah, they're constantly experimenting. Call Perdition City a blind recommendation since I don't know much about the genre - you could either love it or detest it. I haven't listened to A Quick Fix of Melancholy yet. I do prefer their black/folk metal stuff though. Nattens Madrigal was a landmark black metal album.

Frewen 01-22-2008 02:49 AM

^Yes! I love the rawness of Nattens Madrigal; the only album that compares (to me) is Marduk's Panzer Division. Ulver are generally awesome: when I first heard Blood Inside, I couldn't stop playing that CD repeatedly.

But on the topic of trip-top, do Red Snapper count? I've gone back through all my old CDs and found a lot of the Warp Records stuff I used to play all the time.

jackhammer 01-22-2008 02:11 PM

I have never heard Red Snapper. I'm intrigued.

PsychosisD 02-06-2008 02:02 AM

AMON TOBIN-Fav artist

Dmad416 02-06-2008 09:38 AM

portishead is sick

Gelid 02-10-2008 06:34 PM

What about the first album by Hooverphonic A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular? They were considered trip-hop back in 1996.

15Steps 02-16-2008 05:49 AM

Anything by Gorillaz, not their more popular stuff, but especially on D Sides or their debut.

some crazy stuff there.

Seraphina 02-22-2008 03:17 PM

New to the forum, so hello :) I'm a big fan of Trip Hop and very disappointed how small the genre is.

Here are some of my favorites(Artist - Album), though some may be stretching "trip-hop" a bit.
Telepopmusik - Angel Milk
Bitter:Sweet - The Mating Game
Lovage - Music to Make Love to your Old Lady By
Zero7 - Simple Things
Mandalay - Solace
Olive - Trickle
Lamb - What Sound

Of course anything Portishead and Massive Attack. I'm also a huge fan of Bjork.

I would be interested in hearing the Telepopmusik album. The only track I have by them is Breathe but its a good track.

SubPop 03-31-2008 06:53 AM

Portishead, Massive Attack and Lamb are the big 3 for me.

What about......Roni Size, drum and base inspired trip hop maybe.

What about Kruder and Dorfmeister's K&D sessions album must be a little trip hop in there. For me this album is one of the most amazing pieces of music ever put together.

Mojo 04-01-2008 06:27 AM

Morcheeba?

My favourites have already been mentioned. Tricky's Maxinquaye is something I have playing a lot recently.

Molecules 04-04-2008 04:19 PM

Not to be a pain in the arse, but can Jackhammer or somebody who knows what they're talking about lay down a definitive list...?
I'm familiar with the obvious Bristol stuff but know nothing beyond that
