Plans is probably their most self-conscious album, in the sense that I think they tried really hard to make it sound 'pretty' and 'deep.' Although I still like the album, at times I'm worried simple nostalgia has clouded my judgement over it. When I actually compare it to past albums, I think it's probably among their weakest (Although I do like Summer Skin, Crooked Teeth, and Brothers on a Hotel Bed.)

Narrow Stairs is a turn in a different direction, IMO. It's lighter than Plans, as in it sounds a bit more like the band was having fun on it and less like they were trying to come across as artsy and sensitive.

I am willing to admit though that I'm not a big fan of Gibbard's lyrics as of late... They are far more literal now, which I suppose is good in the sense that it's easier to understand just what he's singing about. He also still writes some pretty turns of phrase but... I think his lyrical blunders are far more apparent now that they're not hidden behind a veil of metaphor.

Plans and Narrow Stairs are their most popular albums and so probably their most liked by the casual fan but the older Death Cab for Cutie is by far much, much better. Plans has all of the "cliche" songs a la: Soul Meets Body, I Will Follow You Into The Dark, What Sarah Said, etc.

I've read they will return to their pre-Plans sound and I couldn't be happier. :)

Although I think Plans headed a little more into the mainstream than their earlier stuff I don't think it's cliche, per se. I like Plans. It's my second favourite to Transatlanticism, which is easily my number one. Never really got into Narrow Stairs as much as the two just mentioned, though.

scottsy 05-16-2010 11:26 PM

I gotta say though, Transatlanticism still tends to be my majopr point of reference as far as Death Cab is concerned.... it also is kinda reinforced by the fact that Trans. was the soundtrack to a pretty phenomenal time in my life, just prior to getting married and moving to the US... it's kinda a landmark life even album for me, i must admit...

Seltzer 05-17-2010 12:09 AM

I've only ever heard Transatlanticism and a few other select songs, all of which I liked. I think I'll go backwards from there through their discography.

Listen to We Have The Facts and We're Voting Yes and Something About Airplanes.

The reasons I say it's cliche is because when you mention Death Cab for Cutie to almost 50% of "fans" they'll name Plans as their favorite album and proceed to sing the songs I have previously listed. I'm not saying the album is bad (because I love Brothers On A Hotel Bed) but it just annoys me when people say that that is their best album when they haven't even heard of their earlier records. Which are so much better.

James 05-17-2010 12:58 AM

I could never get into this band they just seem boring, nothing special.

I have listened to all of their albums a few times over. Plans is their best album. by far.

Laurent Quinn Proper 05-20-2010 08:20 PM

I didn't realize this was an argument. Having said that, there's nothing to argue. We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes, Something About Airplanes, and Transatlanticism are so much better it's not even fair to them to argue otherwise.

lieasleep 05-20-2010 09:33 PM

see when you say things, you are supposed to support them. plans is death ca for cuties best album BECAUSE ben gibbard wrote some of the best melodies of his career against engaging and thought out instrumentation all while tackling mature themes that appeal to the soul on a deeper level than any of the crap on the albums that you inexplicably love.

there i something really special in plans, something that every other album really succeeds in capturing. the photo album got close but didnt quite make it.

Eh.

It's all opinion based. And our opinions obviously cannot co-exist. I enjoy the album but saying that the album contains Ben Gibbard's "best melodies" is completely false to me. I use to believe Plans was Death Cab's best album too but after serious listening to the band's early work, I quickly changed my mind. Everything about the pre-Plans Death Cab screams "better" to me. From the melodies, to the lyrics, to the overall feel and sound.

You can continue to enjoy Plans whilst I'll listen to the band's actual gems. ;)

Not trying to take sides but i would agree in the same way that their older stuff please ME more. Stress the ME. And i also listened to Plans first and then dug into their old stuff and for myself their older stuff has much more emotion and thats just simply more of the music i prefer.

of course our opinions can co-exist. you just give no credence or validity to any opinion other than your own. at least I have respect for Connair but you can take Something about Airplanes and shove it right up your ass :finger:

RVCA 06-08-2010 01:31 AM

Narrow Stairs is my favorite album atm, but I've just begun really going through their discography, so I expect to have a different opinion in a couple weeks.

Love the band

folkloric feel 06-13-2010 11:03 AM

Transatlanticism is a masterpiece.

Irrelevant 06-15-2010 11:11 AM

Death Cab for Cutie is extremely,

extremely

overrated. Srsly, their best songs are the sort that get in your head once every six months, perhaps, when you're feeling real thoughtful and passive. Their songs are either killer (and by killer, I mean average killer, not anything particularly awesome) e.g. transatlanticism, sound of settling, song for summer, or filler -- by which I mean really, really standard.

They're not a bad band, not at all, just not worthy of all the praise they've attained, imho.

I agree. Plans is an absolutely beautiful album :)

debaserr 05-23-2011 11:54 AM

New album leaked, but don't PM me for it as I quit on the band after Plans.

Paedantic Basterd 05-23-2011 11:55 AM

Debating whether or not I can be bothered with this one.

Laurent Quinn Proper 05-23-2011 01:18 PM

The few tracks they've streamed are terrible. I'm passing on this.

Chrysalis 05-24-2011 11:36 AM

Death Cab were one of the bands that I used as an entryway into indie, although Narrow Stairs was disappointing. I'll probably skip the new album.

FaSho 05-29-2011 07:26 PM

I love Death Cab, but the lead single off Codes & Keys is boring as hell. I'll get it when it comes out, but I'm not excpecting much.

wavverton 05-30-2011 02:04 PM

Remember first hearing them like 7 years ago, my how time flies

SeaJay 06-08-2011 04:44 PM

Great band, has soft and a bit more heavy emotional stuff

SarahOvel 06-16-2011 07:19 AM

I like a few of their songs, ones like, Title and Registration and The Sound of Setting. People seem to be disliking their newer stuff so I'm apprehensive about listening to it.

Sarah.

Death Cab For Cutie

I've always been put off by the rather stupid name, but when I saw this clip, I had to rethink.
I think I like them.

Thanks for merging.
Wasn't aware of the existing thread.

I've always thought about listening to them.

They are good, always have been. But they're still on the depressing side lol

Why does their music depress you?

You must already have issues if this beautiful music depresses you.

I don't feel anything other than uplifted when I listen to them.

This is considered an emo band though. How can you listen to "Plans" and walk away feeling uplifted?

You're right, Cath is very jovial song with happy lighthearted lyrics. It's the Walking on Sunshine of '00s.

Because it's one of my favourite albums of all time. The music is beautiful. How on earth that depresses people is just something I can't comprehend.

Music in the main isn't depressing. I can't think of a song that depresses me. Because music is great. Apart from perhaps something like the X Factor. That depresses me.

Do you listen to the lyrics at all, then? He isn't singing about how happy he is for the most part
