Beach house

From last.fm:
"Beach House: Alex Scally (guitar/keyboards) and Victoria Legrand (vocals/keyboards), the latter of whom is the niece of French composer Michel Legrand, create the dreamy lo-fi sounds of Beach House. The Baltimore duo formed in 2005 with Legrand's vocal hush and Scally's delicate instrumentation. Within a year, Beach House charmed indie music enthusiasts across the blogosphere with their languid song craft, while the eerie warmth of "Apple Orchard" landed on Pitchfork's Infinite Mixtape MP3 series in August 2006. Two months later, Beach House issued their eponymous debut album for Carpark. Fall shows with label mates Over The Atlantic were also scheduled."

You came to me from the new album, Devotion:

Rather odd lo-fi with beautiful vocals (extremely reminiscent of Katrina Ford from Celebration).
Give it a whirl if you haven't already.

I've been listening to the new record a lot this week for the show.

Man do I love shoegaze.

adidasss 02-29-2008 02:35 PM

Is that what this is called? I need some edumacating...:o:

Farfisa 03-01-2008 01:49 AM

If you're into Beach House see:

Slowdive "Souvlaki"
The Cocteau Twins "Treasure"
Catherine Wheel "Ferment"

This record's a compact discappointment. It's only good for a few tracks. After the novelty's subsided, you find it becomes monotonous and tends to drag. There is virtually no variation in tempo at all, nor much creative and expansive thought in the song structures. You're three quarters through and it feels as if you've been listening to the same track over and over for hours on end.

A loada bolleaux.

I might change my opinion.

Loz , it was just about as bad and inappropriate as I could get eh:D

A big apology to each individual member of Beach House. This album is tha shiz. It's almost without flaw. Band with great potential. Please don't give up on it, after the 3rd spin it'll almost sound good.

chartsengrafs 03-23-2008 01:34 PM

just downloaded it the other day. it's pretty good

Farfisa 12-23-2009 02:59 PM

Hey man, cool to see another Marylander around. As for good music to come out of this ****ty state these days, Baltimore has had a growing music scene over the last decade or so. There's Lungfish, who are pretty incredible, if you like their genre. And Wye Oak, who, if you like Beach House, you would probably love. Double Dagger is a pretty phenomenal Baltimore post-punk group..

But one of the coolest things about most Baltimore bands, I've noticed, is their uniform gratitude to Baltimore. In the liner notes to a lot of the Baltimore-based albums I have, there is a huge mention of their hometown somewhere in there, which is nice to see. I mean, of course, I'm not saying bands from other cities don't do that sort of thing, but Baltimore bands seem to be very enthusiastic about their city. :D

(And dude, if you count Washington D.C. as a part of Maryland like I do, there's some serious bands from there. Fugazi, Dismemberment Plan, Nation of Ulysses, Minor Threat, etc.)

Yeah, the first few songs are quite gorgeous. But this band never really could hold my attention for a whole album. We'll see what happens with this one.

I've heard of Wye Oak and Lungfish, but I'm more interested in what bands from Philly are pushing out. These days I'm more upset about not being able to go into DC or Baltimore City for a show and worry about being mugged walking down the street than about what Baltimore based bands are putting out, it's ****ing rediculous. My Uncle and his girlfriend used to live on the same street as the Ottobar and they've had shootouts down the street and *******s trying to break in quite frequently.

would you consider them to be shoegazer? i mean i guess i can see how you would get that but i see them as very different from say slowdive or my bloody valentine. beach house is a little more out there, especially with the percussion stuff they do.

Farfisa 12-23-2009 11:31 PM

If anything they have more of a dream pop sound, which is 75% similar to shoegaze.

 I don't know about all that... Obviously neither cities are safe places to go. But I go to DC all over the place quite regularly and Baltimore on occasion and haven't had much trouble. For all the bands going there, it is well worth dealing with (though I imagine my tone would change if I was caught in a shootout walking to a concert). I haven't seen more than maybe a fight or two in all the times I've been there to see bands. Definitely never seen anyone pull a knife or a gun except for times I've been there looking for trouble and knowing full well what I was getting into.

Back on topic, Teen Dream continues in a great direction, I'm really digging it lately. Beach House are one of the best doing dream pop stuff these days in my opinion. Never fails to hold my attention and suck me in the whole way through.

bubblenoise 01-06-2010 04:28 PM

I recently saw them at a tiny venue in SF and they blew me away. Victoria's vocals have evolved and matured so much that it was truly a pleasure to watch them live. Each song translated very well in the live setting and the place was packed with people of all ages, which always signifies a band with lasting potential to me. As for the new record, from what I've heard I am hopeful that 2010 will be Beach House's year!!

Yeah, it's definitely happening. Zebra and Take care feel like instant classics. Definitely a front runner for album of the year.

clutnuckle 02-05-2010 02:12 PM

"You have no idea how much porn came up when I searched Beach House Teen Dream."

Meph1986 02-05-2010 03:28 PM

I gave the new album a listen in December but it didn't do much for me. It wasn't bad but .....eh. I'll give it another listen or two to see if it grows on me.

DeadShotKeen 02-05-2010 04:17 PM

Picked up the new one just today so only played it once but it sounds stronger than 'Devotion', on which only 'Wedding Bell', 'Heart Of Chambers' (gorgeous) and 'Home Again' were keepers for me ultimately. Sounds like they've stepped it up a notch and delivered a more consistent LP. Early days though, like I say.

adidasss 02-05-2010 07:34 PM

Yeah, it's definitely more consistent. Stronger songwriting. I was under the impression that Legrand was just the voice but she does the organs too which is basically the anchor of their style.

Sneer 03-14-2010 04:30 PM

I've seen Teen Dream being bandied around all over the place recently, seems to be the 'in' album at the moment.

Having listened to it once so far, I can definately say it has the potential to become a real highlight of 2010. It has that same lazy, ethereal calm underpinning the music that initially endeared me to Cocteau Twins - it's like a cross between Victorialand and Heaven or Las Vegas.

But with real words, which I don't mind at all.

Elizabeth Fraser speaks in angel tongue, dont knock.

crushedblind 07-27-2010 08:21 PM

ahh here you are

wexy 07-28-2010 08:02 AM

I saw them last night at Prospect Park at Celebrate Brooklyn. They opened for The National.
A nice set and good for a summer evening in the Park.

crushedblind 07-30-2010 06:11 PM

that sounds pleasant
i think they're opening for vampire weekend when they come my way

Demasco 09-11-2010 02:17 PM

Teen Dream is pretty amazing. I could listen to Norway on repeat for hours

duga 09-11-2010 02:19 PM

Norway is definitely the first song that caught my attention on Teen Dream but the whole album is great. Devotion is just as good, I think. Beach House really make solid albums all around. I'm excited to see if they can develop their sound even more.

mikegoodfss 09-12-2010 12:08 AM

Great band again

sleepnow 11-04-2010 04:10 PM

Teen Dream is still my pick for best album of 2010.

I found their previous albums a bit of a bore honestly, but "Teen Dream" happened to be one of my favorite albums of this year. I do remember them saying something about working alot more on this year's album and it shows. Maybe I'm just close minded and I need catchy songs to fall in love with an album (which the previous albums lacked).

Anyway, did you guys watch the DVD that was packaged with "Teen Dream"? I still have to dig it out of the jacket as I haven't seen it yet.

henry 11-09-2010 08:38 AM

They are good, but they get boring fast.

katrine 11-09-2010 12:35 PM

If anyone's interested you can listen to the concert they played at this years roskilde festival here: BEACH HOUSE - P3 Live | Sveriges Radio
i only saw a part of it and i was really tired - so i can't really judge the concert, but it was one of only a very few to receive 6/6 stars.

sleepnow 11-15-2010 03:53 PM

Thanks for this!

They used to bore the piss out of me too, but I reeeaaalllyyy like "Walk In the Park". The rest of the album is good too, but not enough to make me really want to seek out any of their older stuff.
