How indie do you think you are now?

Double X 10-22-2008 05:53 PM

I JUST got to listen to that whole album you sent me (the one above). It's pretty good. I like the 3rd, 4th, and 6th songs...but the whole album is good.

Urban Hat€monger ? 10-22-2008 06:09 PM

photoshopped pictures of her promoting her album perhaps?

sleepy jack 10-22-2008 06:13 PM

Or maybe Paris Hilton is more of a hipster than we give her credit for!

swim 10-22-2008 06:19 PM

That's why her album sounds like it does.

Yeah, I suck.

Zombeels 10-22-2008 06:51 PM

good job on the photo editing. I still can't figure out how to do that.

henry 10-22-2008 07:31 PM

one the 2nd photo, what album is that?

sleepy jack 10-22-2008 07:31 PM

Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica.

dac 10-22-2008 11:00 PM

Why can't one like NMH without the concern for the "Indie" tag. It's a fantastic album regardless of how many people know about it.

Hey, good music is good music. Even rich bimbos recognize it.

Roygbiv 10-24-2008 11:13 AM

That Paris Hilton photo, the first one, is photoshopped. For those of you who own the CD, look at the right spine. It's green, not brown, and the text is black and not white.

Akira 10-24-2008 11:16 AM

...and we already stated it was photoshopped....and showed the original!!

So true. I think when an indie CD becomes popular some people feel they have to hate it so they think they can be really hip.

Or they could just be completely bored by it I.E me.

Akira 10-24-2008 12:36 PM

I hate it when you dont like something and the obsessive fans say 'you dont understand it, you're not listening to it.'

Yes! I am, Yes I do!! I just don't like it. It IS possible for people to have a different opinion to yourself without either of us being wrong. Also, go and listen to a lot more music and then come back and honestly say that this is one of the best albums around.

Dude, you just need to REALLY sit down, and REALLY listen to it... :p:

lucifer_sam 10-26-2008 10:59 AM

Or...not.

People can have different opinions about a piece of music. Not everyone has to like the same things.

Well, that's what I'm told.

dac 10-26-2008 08:12 PM

I was being sarcastic :D

Brad Stengel 10-29-2008 06:45 PM

This thread is supposed to upset people based on the premise that a celebrity listening to Neutral Milk Hotel and Captain Beefheart makes them less appealing.

What?

What?

Certain people think that the only reason people listen to Neutral Milk Hotel is for the image...

Alfred 10-29-2008 08:00 PM

I like Neutral Milk Hotel. Nothing to do with image.

I know...which is funny, because of the dozen or so fans know, none of them read Pitchfork or are considered "Hipsters" in the least...they're just college kids with an interest in music that drink too much. And even when I discovered it, it was one of the first indie albums I ever got, and nobody else I knew had heard of them.

People are just resentful because its not the hidden gem it once was.

Exactly.

I was reading this topic yesterday and I figured that I would give this band a shot. I downloaded like 12 songs, some of which didn't turn out good, and I was blown away. This band seriously had something good.

Neutral Milk Hotel has that effect on new listeners more often than any other band I've ever heard. That alone makes Mangum one of the best songwriters of all time.

Download all of "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" if you're just getting into them, it's their masterpeice.

I would listen to Brad Stengel. It's what I did, and ended up buying it anyway. Now I'm saving the big bucks to get it on vinyl (my CD skips, sigh).

Akira 10-31-2008 11:48 AM

Just an observation:

Out of all the people I know who love music or listen to it, the ones who have a reasonable sized collection of music don't list ITAOTS or OK Computer in their top 10 albums. Some of them like the albums but they just understand that there is simply much more better music out there than just listening to Neutral Milk Hotel or Radiohead.

They only ones who even consider NMH to be anything as 'amazing, awesome, best ever' are those who haven't heard much music or their first serious foray into music happened to be NMH, OK Computer etc etc.

I consider myself an exception. Yes there are better albums, but despite having hundreds of albums spanning many genres, ITAOTS is still in my top ten.

Again, why so concerned with the image, or who likes it?

lucifer_sam 10-31-2008 12:41 PM

I don't mind that so many people like ITAOTS, and I can even see why they would. But that doesn't mean that everyone has to. I'm just tired of people shoving it down my throat.

And I liked On Avery Island better...

Akira 10-31-2008 12:44 PM

The point I was making is:

Are albums like NMH or OK Computer (the two most whored albums on this site) two of the best albums...or two of the best albums you've heard?

Like I stated in my previous post, it seems as though they are good, but not that good.
