Dirty projectors

Apparently there's no thread on this band so:

http://forcefieldpr.com/site/wp-cont...projectors.jpg

Dirty Projectors is a Brooklyn-based band led by Dave Longstreth, a former student of music composition at Yale University who left his studies to pursue a full-time career in music. His first album, The Graceful Fallen Mango was released under his own name and introduced his distinctive arrangements of both lo-fi and hi-fi production[1]. Longstreth released his first album as "Dirty Projectors" in 2003 entitled The Glad Fact, on the Western Vinyl label. In 2005 he released The Getty Address, a concept album surrounding musician Don Henley; in 2007 he released Rise Above, an album of Black Flag songs as reimagined from memory. In 2007 he also did a Take-Away Show acoustic video session shot by Vincent Moon. In April 2008, Dirty Projectors signed with Domino Records, and the label announced the release of Bitte Orca for June 9, 2009. 2009 also found the band collaborating with David Byrne on the song "Knotty Pine" for the compilation album, Dark Was the Night. On May 8, 2009, members of Dirty Projectors will collaborate with Björk to perform an original composition by Longstreth, written for five voices and acoustic guitar, as part of a charity concert to benefit Housing Works, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing shelter for homeless men, women, and children suffering from AIDS. The concert is to be held at the Housing Works Bookstore & Café in downtown New York City. - wiki

I'm just listening to Bitte Orca and I'm liking it quite a bit. I gave Rise Above a once-over a few years back but it didn't really catch my attention for some reason. The lead vocals are very unique, not so much in the tone as the interpretation, but the guy can definitely sing. This album seems to be more accessible, more pop/dance so it grabbed me more than Rise Above (which I'll definitely have to revisit).

I love "The Glad Fact" and "Rise Above". They get a bunch of **** for their live improvisions and whatnot (mostly from tasteless douches) but, the guy does have an amazing voice and it was the first thing that caught my attention.

JJJ567 04-20-2009 02:10 PM

Slaves' Graves and Ballads is amazing. I haven't listened to anything else though. I really need to.

adidasss 04-20-2009 02:13 PM

I've given Rise above a few more listens and I just can't seem to get into it at all. Bitte orca is just an entirely different sort of animal. A whole new level for them I'd say, just like Veckatimest was for Grizzly bear...It's not nearly as amazing as Veckatimest but it has really gorgeous moments.

Did you listen to "The Glad Fact" yet?

BlueCadet 04-30-2009 10:36 AM

I really like their sound, but I definitely need to listen to them more.

adidasss 04-30-2009 11:25 AM

Stillness is the move is one of the best songs of the year...

BlueCadet 04-30-2009 11:41 AM

I really like Temecula

adidasss 04-30-2009 02:09 PM

Well I like most of them, there's only one which does nothing for me, Two doves. The rest range from good to spectacular. I'd say it's one of the best albums of the year.

Rainard Jalen 06-19-2009 12:19 PM

i second adidasss. this album is tha sh1t. amazing. it is super weird how it is indie rock, but sounds like r&b/hip-hop/soul. REALLY fckin bizarre. but amazing. the female harmony parts are unbelievably great, and sexy too.

the_dp 06-19-2009 03:23 PM

saw them open for TVOTR and LOVED them. going to download their newest album soon. Great vocals and one of the few indie bands that you can watch them perform and appreciate how good the girls look too.

i don't think they're 'indie rock', they're just 'indie'. 'stillness is the move' IS r&b/pop, there's nothing too rock about it. but yeah, great album, not easy to get into.

haven't heard deerhoof and yeah yeah yeahs are like dictionary definition of suck.

cardboard adolescent 06-23-2009 11:18 PM

I really like Rise Above and The Getty Address, downloading the new album now. They kind of sound like they're from an alternate universe. Alien and awesome.

Mouchois 06-24-2009 05:52 AM

They remind me of someone but I can't put my finger on it. The girl's voice sounds so ridiculously familiar it's killing me.

But all in all, I love this band. It's coordinated chaos at it's best. <3

Not easy maybe by any objective standards, but it's definitely the Dirty Projector's most accessible album to date!

Just got a copy of Bitte Orca. Im really enjoying it. Where should I go from here?

What about Ra Ra Riot?

Anyways, Bitte Orca is phenomenal! I cannot stop listening to it. I love the song Two Doves. It just a beautiful song...

+81 07-04-2009 06:35 PM

I didn't really dig Rise Above but I wanted to hear the rest of Bitte Orca. The single is insanely catchy.

abdullah424 10-19-2009 11:11 PM

I finally get to see these guys live. Ever since I heard Bitte Orca I've been waiting for them to come to Chicago.

Farfisa 10-20-2009 01:47 PM

I don't think I can see them tonight, ****ing a. Not having a car or a driver's license for that matter can really hold ya back.

loveissucide 10-20-2009 02:12 PM

Bitte Orca is decent, but not as good as some say it is.

lol...I'm in the same boat man. Thankfully Chicago has great public transportation. God bless the L trains.

debaserr 12-18-2009 08:08 PM

i think Bitte Orca is my favorite album from 2009.

Farfisa 12-19-2009 08:17 PM

Any personal favorites on "Bitte Orca"? I've given it a once through, but I didn't really find anything memorable on it.

lieasleep 12-20-2009 12:24 AM

Cannibal Resource, stillness is the move, useful chamber, and Temecula sunrise are the standouts for me, in that order. great album, so different and interesting but still tasteful and accessible.

cardboard adolescent 12-21-2009 01:04 AM

what he said, i think "no intention" is great too

debaserr 12-21-2009 03:27 PM

anyone else hear the Temecula Sunrise EP? its got 2 new tracks on it. PM for info.

Phantom Limb 10-19-2011 02:17 PM

I hate the Dirty Projectors. Bitte Orca was garbage.

tigerbeathappening 11-08-2011 07:27 PM

Really, why? It might be a tad overrated, but I find it quite appealing. It's off-kilter in a way that seems effortless, which is something that I think is really hard to do.

DriveYourCarDownToTheSea 02-05-2014 03:26 PM

Listening to Bitte Orca right now. It's a tad schizophrenic, but not overly so. Really interesting stuff.

adidasss 12-06-2020 06:06 AM

Went through 3 of the 5 EPs of their latest 5EPs before I had to go back to Rise above and Bitte Orca for some palette cleansing and to remember what made these guys so interesting, way back when. Now they seem to be going through some boring white soul phase. :/

P.s. Still can't really get into Rise above, but at least it's not boring.

Lisnaholic 12-06-2020 06:39 AM

This is one of the things that keeps me coming to MB: recommendations of great music I've never heard of. This Bitte Orca I'm listening to this morning is such a total, uplifting surprise! Many thanks, adidasss - for the thread, and for bumping it. :thumb:

Marie Monday 12-06-2020 07:02 AM

I like Bitte Orca a lot, I also just discovered them this year. Didn't really get into the other albums, apart from Rise Above and Swing Lo Magellan

adidasss 12-06-2020 07:03 AM

Hurray!! So glad you like it Lisna, it's one of my favorites from the 00s. :)

DriveYourCarDownToTheSea 12-08-2020 05:20 PM

Since I posted my post above from 6 years ago, have listened to Bitte Orca many times and grew to like it. The opening song always sounded like an Elvis Costello tune.

debaserr 12-08-2020 06:37 PM

It's a unique album, and really the only thing they made that I love.
