"All the donuts have names that sound like prostitutes..."

If Tom Waits doesn't write good lyrics then I have no ****ing clue who does.

Oh, and I think Tom Waits is better than Nick Cave, not by a landslide or anything though. However, I do think Nick Cave is a much better performer. Especially here:

Far better than the recorded version in my opinion.

I like the ...unwaveringness (is that a word?!) of the recorded version, I think it fits the song beautifully, but that performance was awesome as well.

By unwavering do you mean like, an Ian Curtis or Nico type of delivery? Sort of emotionally stark? If so I can see where you're coming from and can see how that would suit his type of music. I just love the raw emotional power in that other version, it seems like Nick Cave is about to break down and start sobbing or something.

Here are a couple of my favorite recent Nick Cave video clips.

"There She Goes My Beautiful World," live on Jools Holland:

Grinderman's latest video, "Heathen Child":

Actually, by "unwavering" I was more thinking of the tempo and structure of the track, the way it's built as a series of powerful leitmotifs (at least, that's how I'd describe it), and I always thought that particular structure was the perfect foil to the anguished vocals, and the tension between those two things is one of the reason I love that song. In that live version, I kinda miss that tension - mind you, I'm with you on the raw emotional power part...

If that makes sense?

I love Nick Cave, but he was definitely a part of one of the most uncomfortable mix CDs I've ever received - it was all full of lovey dovey type songs, then the last track was:

SUCH a good song, but definitely changed the entire tone of the mix. :/

I was quite surprised that wizards and witches listen to Nick Cave. (i.e. one of Nick Cave's songs was playing on the radio in a monumental scene in the latest Harry Potter movie). I thought this was pretty cool. Considering the Harry Potter films usually only use instrumental scores.

I don't think he's ever made a bad record, so you could probably pick any of his albums at random... Or start at the beginning, with From Her To Eternity...
