I'm not sure people hate Wavves, more the fact he gets a lot of attention ahead of artists that are similar and much better. I dunno really, he's hyped up by Pitchfork isn't he? That alone seems to get bands a lot of stick on the internet, almost always an exaggerated amount in my opinion, although Pitchfork do hype up some very average s'hit.
Wavves is perfectly decent though, with a few really great tunes. Who knows... |
Lots of bands are hyped up by different critics though, why's it Pitchfork rated bands that really get it in the neck?
I think the fact Pitchfork hyping them up has something to do with it, but also the lead singer/guitarists live performances.. but I really don't know what it is. They seem to be hated by too many people on the internet, when they're just another noise pop band doing their thing. Decent enough band, but nothing out the ordinary. |
There seems to be an anti-Pitchfork agenda for a lot of people on the internet, I mean I agree that it's not the best site and to be honest I've never really used it for anything, having used lastfm and allmusic (as well as a few forums) for recommendations instead. That said though, I have visited the site sporadically through the years and I don't really get the hate - I think it might just be some elitist internet forum thing...
If you take Wavves' music at face value though, there really is nothing to hate. It's not offensive, it's not making any political statements and it's nothing completely avant-garde or anything ... it's just somewhat decent music, fun at times, boring at others. I have to be in the right mood to enjoy their music, but for me it's nothing to get mega worked up about in a good OR bad way. So I do agree with you, but as for Pitchfork, I just think it's a kinda irrational hatred that's developed among the elitist indie fans on the internet, through the years. |
Pitchfork have hyped up many bands that I adore. The Books for example, but Wavves really do nothing for me.
|
I'm the same, Allmusic Last FM and Rate Your music are my main sources of music recommendations/scouting. I've never visited Pitchfork the site, I've just seen reviews of albums by them on Wiki. I don't get the hate, they're just critics.. no more so c*nty than all the others. Kerrang is my least favourite.
Yeah, I agree. I think the second and third records are both decent Garage rock records. But I don't think it'd be the type of music that would be constantly playing, just every now and again. I wish I knew the reason for Pitchfork hate, they're just doing what they do. Pick good albums to pieces and praise albums that probably don't deserve it. But for what it's worth, I like the Wavves music. |
i think thbey are so hated because of their following, as soon as they hype a record every hipster in the worls goes out and buys it, often ruining it for exeryone else.
|
I hate this hipster bollocks, I didn't even know what one was until I joined this forum. Just judge a record for what it is, not because of its fans. If we judged records by its fans alone, Radiohead would be so fucking hated.
|
I think it's more a case of people getting annoyed at bland garbage like this getting so much hype rather than the people who hype it or listen to it.
If Pitchfork want to hype it, fine by me If 'Hipsters' want to listen to it that's fine too. Just don't expect me to think it's anything more than throwaway crap and don't jump down my throat for thinking that. |
Yeah, you think it's just another garage lo-fi band with no substance? So in other words, you think it's crap.
But I doubt you'd muster up the effort to actually hate them. Some people seem to actually hate them. Thinking it's boring throw away crap is fine, but I don't get the hate. |
I don't hate them, I'm just going by what I thought when I heard them.
|
Yeah, that's fair enough. People who don't like a band usually go "meh, crap."
But for people to muster up hate towards them, I wondered what they'd done to people. I guess it just comes down to the Pitchfork/"Hipster" thing. I listened to their most recent album and found it pretty damn enjoyable. |
I agree with you Urban, as I said I listen to plenty of Pitchfork hyped bands, but Wavves just aren't that great if you want some modern Garage go for The King Khan And BBQ Show.
|
Until you personally know a Pitchfork-zombie hipster you can't relate...

Although they tend to just like a few small bands from small areas of the country that have about 800 fans.. so basically they're just 'Indie' for Indie's sake. |
I don't care at all what Pitchfork or anybody has to say about Wavves.
The guy is simply a horrible musician and that's why I think his band sucks |

I dont care if he's hyped up, life's too short, all I can say is I really enjoyed King of the Beach and I really enjoyed Wavvves.

King of the Beach was surprisingly good. Wavvves was decent as well. |
Loving the new record. Definitely a step forward after two mediocre albums with some excellent moments (So Bored, No Hope Kids namely). Awesome production, catchier songwriting, and a MUCH better rhythm section has helped Nathan Williams a lot. Currently King of the Beach stands as my second favorite of 2010, right after Titus Andronicus' The Monitor.
|
King of the Beach sounds like a good garage rock/lo fi record, Wavvves sounds as if it's trying too hard. The new album has a greater production to it, without it being too glossy. I feel some bands avoid better production in fear of it being too poppy and mainstream but I feel they got it right with this record. Really good. One of my favourite of 2010.
|
Yeah. I like King of the Beach more also. Mickey Mouse is without a doubt my favourite Wavves song.
|
Love the chill vibes of Convertible Balloon. The title track is killer too.
|
i think my favorite song on "king of the beach" is "green eyes"

the best stuff he did was his early stuff, king of the beach sounds like fun at first listen but doesn't do it for me.( look for **** like ''friends were gone'', thats wavves like it should be)
i much prefer Times New Viking, they blow away wavves, or new stuff like The Moonhearts (formerly known as charlie & the Moonhearts), No age, and so on...... |
Im into the whole 'chillwave' movement, but i think Wavves' music can get really messy and inconsistent sometimes... i understand using analog recording equipment if one wants to achieve that sound, but he really overuses it and it gets super muddy. I think Washed Out executes what Wavves is trying to do in a much more concise way.
|
i haven't heard them described as chillwave.
|
are you joking?? i've always considered them, washed out, neon indian, and beach house were like the first wave of chillwave (excuse the lame pun) but if i've been misinformed, please enlighten me (no sarcasm intended)
|
its shitgaze. or at least the first album was.
|
i wouldn't consider King of the Beach ****gaze.
and i'm not exactly sure what chillwave is, so maybe it's that? i dunno. i pretty much just call it skater/surfer rock. |
Quote:
wavves his early stuff could be considered ****gaze but in my opinion it were just noisy, lo-fi pop records. |
Does it bother anyone else that they have a sound thats absolutely impossiple to translate live?
|
^I got that too. I saw No Age a couple years ago at Bumbershoot and their concert was completely incomprehensible. I can imagine Wavves being like that live too.
|
i heard king of the beach today after pretty much avoiding it at all costs.
and they actually don't suck as much **** as i thought they would. in fact, i kinda like them. oh ****, i'm becoming a hipster. |
Not a fan at all, this recent surf rock trend has been rubbing me the wrong way I guess.
|
Nate had a pretty good backing band (from Jay Reatard). I think the drummer recently left, and now he has the drummer from the Mae Shi.
|
I don't get the Nirvana comparisons at all...
Fave track: |

So where do I start with this band? I've heard that King of the Beach is where it's at just thought I'd get a few more opinions first.
|
Seems too generic to me
