Wavves

I love Wavves. There cd is amazing and my favorite of this year (so far of course).
Is anyone else a fan.

Sneer 05-07-2009 05:30 PM

Wavvves is fucking good. Havent got the other one, i love the noise-surf-punk vibe.

Gone Sugaring 05-07-2009 07:07 PM

I like the Wavves album for it mixes two things I love, surf rock and lo-fi.

Brad Stengel 05-09-2009 03:43 PM

He has some reeeaaalllyyy catchy songs. The vocals can bother me at times, but I'd much rather my punk rock too lo-fi than too glossy.

debaserr 05-09-2009 07:31 PM

yea i think this is my favorite of the year so far too.

GravitySlips 05-10-2009 02:23 PM

i haven't heard this but i like his first album.

i'll get this soon cuz i'm seeing him live soonish

Pitchfork: Wavves Self-Destruct in Barcelona
 Yeah, I'd definitely pay to see that...

Hahaha I lol'd so hard when I first saw that. They're gonna be old news even faster than expected if they keep that up.

bardonodude 10-22-2009 10:04 AM

pitchfork band. I like one song of theirs, i need to give their stuff a better listen though. i hear the singer dude gets really high/drunk before he plays and it often ruins their set.

adidasss 10-22-2009 10:22 AM

Whatever gave you that idea?

lol, Im at work and cant watch youtube videos. I have a feeling its of exactly what I said lol. *facepalms self*.

I like Woods a lot more than wavves. I have the split they did together.

bardonodude 10-23-2009 07:32 AM

i listened to wavves again last night, I dont understand how they are so popular or hyped. I really can't get into their stuff. even their most popular song so bored was pretty boring. I was reading a quote about the way he makes his music and he was pretty much saying, if it wasnt for the way he recorded it, the music sounds like ****ty stereotypical pop.

Alfred 10-23-2009 07:37 AM

That applies to a large amount of indie.

if thtas true, then i sadly can't respect them as musicians. I bet a lot of bands suck live if thats true.

You've just answered your own question there.

People dont like Wavves for their textured, epic works of art, it's disposable, trashy and raw as - and thats why people like it. Whether their music is boring or not is just down to every individual listeners personal tastes i guess.

Using the word 'epic' to describe Wavves' music strikes me as quite funny (I won't get into 'textured' but I don't think it's an apt description either). How is it epic? If anything I thought they were going for anti-epic.

Sneer 10-23-2009 11:14 AM

... did you actually read anything other than the first 5-10 words of my post? Im saying people dont listen to Wavves to be engulfed in a wave of texture and mood, they listen to Wavves because it's fun, disposable and in your face music. The abrasive, trashy nature of it appeals to certain listeners.

I read the whole thing. Although somehow I overlooked your 2nd word (don't) and I thought you were saying that people like Wavves because they find it epic and textured as well as abrasive and trashy. Oops

Sneer 10-23-2009 12:49 PM

Lol, no worries

i can definitely understand where you're coming from. I just dont really think its that trashy or raw, i think its just really ****ty recording with really ****ty musicianship and really ****ty song structure lol. I love trashy raw music like durga, or jihad. But this doesn't give me any enjoyment. 99% of me wonders if the only reason people like this band is because pitchfork is all over their nuts while .5% of me wonders if I'm missing something while the other .5% of me accepts that I can't get into them purely because im just not a hipster.

i cant argue the ****ty musicianship or production. however, it has good structure. some people dont dig on shitgaze. you appear to be one of those people.

Sneer 10-23-2009 02:24 PM

This may sound odd, but i love the ****ty musicianship and ****ty production, as i said, its so trashy and i find it refreshing. Theres so much energy in this approach i think. Its something you can just listen to and completely shut off. And i do think the songs are well structured. At the end of the day its different strokes for different folks, bands like Wavves, Eat Skull, Times New Viking and Railcars just do it for me when im in a certain mood.

this. there's a difference between raw and lacking effort. wavves strike me as the kind of guys that caught on to this whole noise-pop thing and said "hey i can do that too". fuzz out everything i record and it sounds "noisy"; no, it sounds like you aren't even trying

calling wavves' albums "epic works of art" is insulting to the things that people have genuinely put effort into creating.

adidasss 10-24-2009 03:26 PM

If you look really carefully, you'll notice that no one actually called wavves' albums epic works of art...

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 10-24-2009 04:43 PM

hahah oh **** i totally misread that... my bad stu.

clutnuckle 06-21-2010 04:29 PM

The new album is WAYYYYY better than the previous one. Then again, I thought Wavvves was absolutely laughable, but still. If he keeps it up, he could genuinely be good one day.

why bother hearing the 2nd if the 1st was laughably bad? personally i try to steer clear of stuff i don't like. but thanks for the protip about the leak :)

keith! 06-21-2010 05:02 PM

really digging the new album.

i hope people who didn't like wavvves or didn't like nathan being a lil' pussy at his live show don't just ignore this album. it's extremely different and extremely varied. it's like this weird mix of blink 182, no age, and hell..animal collective. potential to be the album of the summer for me.

debaserr 06-21-2010 05:06 PM

i dunno about that, but the cover is awesome.

and yeah...that cover be dope!

I'd heard the second one was a dramatic step in the right direction, and since I had an hour to spare I decided to give it a listen through. Took a few more spins of it and made up my mind. I wouldn't have bothered if I had the idea in my head that I would hate it like I did Wavvves.

The variation really sealed the deal for me. I still wouldn't say it's beyond an average aping of everything, but SOOOOO much better than Wavvves. I can't stress that enough. I find some of these songs to actually be fun, and not just horrifying.

keith! 06-21-2010 05:27 PM

I find lots of it fun. Mickey Mouse is without a doubt my favourite. But King of the Beach, Post Acid and Green Eyes are wicked summer jams.

GravitySlips 06-21-2010 05:58 PM

I heard King of the Beach, not at all impressed with it to be honest. I like a lot of Wavves' songs but I can't really get that into any of the previous two albums these days, and based on King of the Beach I doubt I'll check out the new one in all honesty.

TheCunningStunt 06-30-2010 01:21 PM

Why do some people really hate this band? I heard 'Wavvves' and it wasn't a great record, but it was decent enough. Some people seem to loathe this band, is it just because the singer/guitarist is a bit of a cock or what? Can anyone offer an explanation?

Is their new album any good as well? (King of the Beach)

debaserr 06-30-2010 01:35 PM

TheCunningStunt 06-30-2010 01:37 PM

They don't seem very successful though.. A fair few people seem to hate them and brand them as pretentious shite, just because they have a lo-fi sound (I assume, but I'm not too sure.)

They obviously aren't a brilliant band, but their album was a decent enough listen.

debaserr 06-30-2010 01:43 PM

some people hate on shitgaze.

TheCunningStunt 06-30-2010 01:47 PM

****gaze, terrible genre.

Surely it's simply Garage Rock?
