Great Indie bands...

the "indie" rock term has now become a genre, but what are some of your favorite truly indie bands?

i saw these guys twin berlin playing w/ gliss and they were awesome!!
i'm also a huge fan of passion pit and the takeover uk.

Well The Killers are a bit more Alternative rock but whatever they're still awesome

indie is not a genre, it refers to a band whose music is released on an independent label. that being said some great bands:

early death cab (anything before plans, although plans is their best album, it was released on a major label)
early decemberists
Neutral Milk Hotel
the antlers
sufjan stevens
beirut

the smiths and joy division are also two indie bands although they are considered post-punk/ alternative

just to name a few totally random bands. obviously there are a butt-load of others but just troll around the indie forums and you'll find some that you'll like

not true, you are enabling it just by saying that. one thing i know from the music world is that just because the masses say one thing does not mean that it is true. just look at the grammys, they are awards for the absolute worst music of the year, but any random person would say that the music featured at the grammys was good. although i didn't articulate that well at all, my point is, just because everyone says it is a genre, does not mean it is.
