Ok so, no thread on this comp, even though it's probably the best compilation in indie music, ever (well I haven't heard any other, but the list of artist is impressive).

Dark Was the Night is the twentieth compilation release benefiting the Red Hot Organization, an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS. Featuring exclusive recordings by a number of independent artists and production by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National, the compilation was released on 16 February 2009 (UK) and 17 February 2009 (US) as a double CD, three vinyl LPs, or as a digital download.[1] John Carlin, the founder of the Red Hot Organization, was the executive producer for the album. The title is derived from the Blind Willie Johnson song "Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground," which is covered on this collection by the Kronos Quartet.

I really like it, there are some excellent covers, like Andrew Bird's cover of "The Giant of Illionis", Sufjan Steven's cover of You Are The Blood, is amazing, his best work in years. The original songs are great too, I think that the Red Hot Organization and Antony Dessner did great work.

I've seen this mentioned a few times, thought Eskimo Snow by Why? was going to be featured as well but it looks like it didn't make the cut. I haven't heard it either but it looks amazing from the songs/artists I'm already familiar with.

They did an amazing job. Really, this is the all-star line up of indie music. And I agree that the Sufjan track is fantastic, definitely one of the highlights, along with Knotty pine and The National's track (which was a really pleasant surprise after Boxer). That's all from the first disc though, I haven't managed to properly digest the second one yet. Too much good stuff happening on the first one...(:

YES! I have been in love with this compilation since it came out. my personal favorite is Lua, but I listen to this whole album every time I go for a drive and forget my Ipod.
