I love the Arctic Monkeys but I usually have no idea what their lyrics are about because of the accent and "language" barrier.

In this country guys drinking Smirinoff ices = pussies.

Trailer trash would be more likely to dress in a wife beater and ripped up jeans, but it is more of a product of being poor and a lack of positive role-models than anything else. I doubt they think they look good in it...

alreet = alright. I think they are a very northen English band. A person from the south might not 'get them.' I'm surprised they appeal to a mass audience because they're so damn British.

'Chavs' tend to drink their 2 Smirnoff Ices and then they act like complete drunken knobs.

I think 'Chavs' are like trailer trash in a sense, they come from council houses. (Dunno if you know what they are  but if that's a language barrier thing then the council is erm.. like a local athorities/the people that look after their area. So they give poor people crappy houses to live in.) so in that respect they're similar. Both poor.. some Chavs actually come from middle class environments but they just like to fit in.

Violent & Funky 04-10-2010 12:21 AM

OK, I have determined we don't really have an equivalent here but the closest thing is probably a mixture of trailer trash and wanna-be ghetto kids. We have a lot of dumb kids in the white neighborhoods here who think they are ghetto but are really just morons. I have a hard time imagining a ghetto person in the UK haha...

TheCunningStunt 04-10-2010 12:25 AM

Ghetto person? Is that like a wannabe gangster?

Violent & Funky 04-10-2010 12:42 AM

Yeah, ghetto and gangster mean about the same thing...

TheCunningStunt 04-10-2010 01:14 AM

Black lads that like their bling etc. and white lads who wish they were a black lad? (Eminem.)

We do get them over here... which I still find it hard to believe

HeartsMadeOfStrings 04-10-2010 10:24 PM

SO MUCH NON-MODEST MOUSE SPEAK.

/caps

But, the Arctic Monkeys are love.

Quite interesting how a thread about Modest Mouse can turn into a discussion about what chavs are.

At least with 'trailer trash' there's a bit of a connection...but that wasn't even accounted for.

debaserr 04-11-2010 01:43 PM

im going to continue on this irrelevant tangent for 1 more post.

TheCunningStunt 04-11-2010 01:43 PM

 I have no idea how that happened because most chavs I know won't have heard of Modest Mouse..

You're from Seattle, do you know what they are? How do you know? - I'm making them sound like some mystic creature.

Not gonna lie, it crossed my mind.

In fact, I was wondering if that was how TheCunningStunt knew what trailer trash is...

TheCunningStunt 04-11-2010 01:58 PM

How I knew what trailer trash is? The Simpsons :D and films

I have a good idea what chavs are. I think I learned it from Lady Sovereign. :D

As a matter of fact I was walking downtown earlier today and saw this guy and said "hmm, he looks like a chav".

From what I gather, the closest thing is a whigger (but not an all-out hardcore ghetto one). Athletic shoes, track jackets, track suits, etc. and tend to listen to hip-hop and electronic music perhaps. Trailer trash are usually dirtier and not as specific...some are into rap, some rock and metal, some country, etc. But they're generally dirty whereas chavs, from my understanding, care more about appearances and like to show off their cash/bling/whatever.

TheCunningStunt 04-11-2010 09:52 PM

Yeah I'd say your perception of them is pretty much the best I'm gonna get from someone over the pond. They like to show off brands like Nike, as if they're fashionable. It's more the 'G wannabes' that wanna show off their bling but I get what you mean.

It's kind of wrong to categorise people, people with longish hair (Alex Turner 2007 long, not long like now..) are considered the Indie cool type. Number 2 and a trim on top is considered chavvy. If you shop at Topman (dunno if they have Topman over there) It used to be the Indie type shop where all the cool people go, if you shopped there you were cool... until the chavs started taking a fancy to it.

Yeah I didn't mean bling like gold chains and jewelry, I just meant show off what they have and that they can afford stuff, namely athletic brands like Adidas, Nike, etc.

A lot of the characters in British gangster flicks that are basically dumb errand boys for the mobsters are usually portrayed as chavs, right? I'm thinking Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, for example, one of the two dudes stealing the rifles was a chav. I think there are some in every British gangster action/comedy.

Hey I wonder if Modest Mouse will ever release another album I like? That would be cool.

Yeah! The two scousers. (the two fellas that talk like complete twats.) They are both from Liverpool arguably the chavviest area in the UK. There's even jokes about them..

What do you call a Scouser in a suit?

The defendant. ;)

So yeah if any American wants to know what a chav is. Watch Lock Stock :D

Also, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank no likey? How come?

sidewinder 04-12-2010 01:13 PM

Most of the songs just make me cringe. Sounds too contrived, don't like his lyrical approach on it and half of Good News... which in turn has greatly affected his vocal style.

TheCunningStunt 04-12-2010 01:20 PM

I haven't listened to We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank yet, still going through their back catalogue. Not heard their first or last album yet.. I adore Good News though :D

gotjuice 04-12-2010 06:42 PM

This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About>>>all. Give it a listen and soon, you won't regret it.

TheCunningStunt 04-12-2010 06:45 PM

I've heard Good News, Moon & Antarctica, Lonesome Crowded West.

Not that keen on Lonesome Crowded West yet, sure it'll grow on me though.

This Is A Long Drive is definitely the next on my list :D

HeartsMadeOfStrings 04-13-2010 05:23 PM

I second This Is A Long Drive.

CunningStunt, Lonesome Crowded West will almost definitely grow on you. What you've listened to so far is good, though. Save We Were Dead for last if you're going to listen to it.

sidewinder 04-13-2010 06:47 PM

TheCunningStunt, I don't remember if you like The Pixies or Built to Spill. But when I first heard The Lonesome Crowded west, I was like, "holly shit! The Pixies had sex with Built to Spill and this is their offspring!" :p:

Needless to say, that makes it awesome.

debaserr 04-13-2010 06:51 PM

i dunno about the built to spill part. but you can really hear the pixies in them. two of my favorite bands.

sidewinder 04-13-2010 06:54 PM

Maybe it was more in The Moon & Antarctica, but when I first started listening to Modest Mouse I definitely heard a strong Built to Spill influence. I've had friends that were fans of Built to Spill (and at the time unfamiliar with Modest Mouse) ask me if I was playing Built to Spill. I was playing The Lonesome Crowded West in the car. I was shocked they would even ask, being supposedly familiar with BtS' music.

I firmly believe that Built to Spill were one of Modest Mouse's biggest influences, along with Pixies.

debaserr 04-13-2010 08:29 PM

going off of wikipedia. built to spill formed 1992, modest mouse 1993.

That's true, but MM's debut album didn't come out till 96, two years after BtS's second. Regardless, it's true that they are moreso contemporaries than anything.

Violent & Funky 04-13-2010 10:04 PM

Doug Martsch was tremendously influenced by J Mascis so maybe that is what you are hearing in both bands?

sidewinder 04-13-2010 10:40 PM

It's possible, not sure. Though I have noticed in the latest Dinosaur Jr. album that some of the guitar playing reminds me of Built to Spill. :p: And I say that because I'm relatively inexperienced with Dinosaur Jr., having only heard 2 of their albums, but I'm very familiar with all of Built to Spill's material.

noise 04-13-2010 10:54 PM

i really need a new modest mouse shirt. i had this awesome giant-red-squid-attacking-a-whale shirt from the Moon and Antarctica tour but i wore it to death.

i also had a buffalo shirt at one point but that one died too.

:(

I love The Pixies but I've never listened to Built To Spill. I think the album will just grow on me, I can kind of tell what you mean about The Pixies when listening to it...

captured 04-18-2010 02:22 AM

I don't know them that well but from what songs I have heard
freakin awwwesome :)

moose0ntheloose 06-27-2010 07:20 PM

dunno if this has been done in the last 60 pages but whats your fav albums in order?
For me it goes:
1 The Moon and Antarctica
2 Building Nothing Out of Something- seldom spoken of and underrated imo
3 Lonesome Crowded West
4 This is a long drive..
5 good news..
Interstate 8 was great but kind of repeated in other albums i guess. Edit the sad parts is one of my favorite songs though.
6 We were dead...
7 no ones first and you're next
8 Everywhere and his nasty parlor tricks
9 Sad Sappy Sucker- some gems but a little too early in the garage sound for me.

Going to see them on the 9th for the 2nd time

debaserr 06-27-2010 07:34 PM

Lonesome Crowded West > Building Nothing Out of Something = This Is A Long Drive > The Moon & Antarctica > Good News > We Were Dead > No One's First And You're Next > Everywhere And His Nasty > The Fruit That Ate Itself > Sad Sappy Sucker

TheCunningStunt 06-27-2010 07:38 PM

Why don't you just visit the This album > That album thread, and go back a couple of pages. Loads of people have done Modest Mouse. :D

keith! 06-27-2010 08:08 PM

in this thread though we could probably talk more about why it is our favourite album.

Mine is by far Moon & Antarctica. It's laid back and it's easy going. I like every song on it and the thing flows beautifully. I'm never bored when I'm listening to it, it's always holding my attention. It's probably my favourite album of the 2000s.
