I need to get Lonesome Crowded West before I can pass definitive judgment on them though.
If you like those you'll like the Lonesome Crowded West I personally think its better.

Compilation, not an album. It's called Building Nothing Out of Something by the way.

Alright well in that case, All Night Diner, Baby Blue Sedan and Whenever You Breathe Out, I Breathe In (Positive / Negative) are some of Modest Mouse's best songs ever. Particularly the last one.

Though, I reckon, they should be counted only in the case that the band compiles it. In that case it can still be viewed as a conceptual work of the band.

I'm pretty sure they compiled it because it's such an odd grouping of songs and also missing stuff like A Manic Depressive Named Laughing Boy, Edit the Sad Parts etc from that time. If they'd included all those I'd consider it their best but sadly they didn't.

as an "odd grouping of songs" it's awfully cohesive.

and a compilation album is still an album regardless of who compiled it. those NOW compilations are just as much albums as tribute compilations, or B-side compilations

I said it was an odd grouping of songs because if you look at the tracklist they're taken from all over the place. Which isn't a bad thing, it's cohesive like you said I just don't think if a record company compiled it they would've resisted the urge to possibly turn it into a double album which they could've.

Is it me or does Modest Mouse sound like an English band?

Every time I listen to them I imagine them playing in some London bar...idk maybe it's just me.
