no way. heavy metal is closer to classical. math rock has just too many technical differences to classical

I have to agree. A lot of math rock is pretty aggressive, I don't see a connection at all. Metal either, for that matter.

I think IDM (or cerebral electronic music as a whole) is far more like modern classical music.
