CANADA'S Finest (Yes, Canada)

Right we have Britain and America, so why not Canada: There's a string of great bands coming out of their Maple-lined borders. Instead of slagging them off let's praise them for once... **** knows they need some. To start off I'll say the curltastic Hot Hot Heat and the Arcade Fire, whose first single we just got here and the Mediterranean shores of Ireland. Come on, there's loads of 'Nadian (I was too lazy for Ca) acts give me a few. And go easy on me, it's my first new thread. Whew... Never thought that cherry would pop *Rambles on aimlessly for 300 more words* Happy posting!

If Rush are allowed in, Neil Young deserves a mention too.

Anarchy doll 03-06-2005 09:57 AM

well, there are lots of sellouts come out of Canada. I am from here, and yes, many of good bands are on the up, but why it is important? I don't know.
Look at Shania Twain, the sellout...you know she wouldn't even come to Canada to accept the Juno award? mad Stompin' Tom Connors soooo pissed that he gave his hard earned Junos back to show that music is not about that, respect is....
But then again, there is the sell outs Avril Lavigne, Simple Plan(they are getting there),
but all the old time bands like Rush ,the Guess who, and so on,,,they didn't care cuz nobody else really cared...that's what makes them great Canadians eh?

Fenixpunk 03-06-2005 11:02 AM

Iskra

The Indie Bar Kid 03-08-2005 02:05 PM

Heh heh y'all done forgot about the Dears... Great band

I like our lady peace well all thier old stuff.

Anarchy doll 03-14-2005 07:17 PM

yeah, most of Clumsy was great for it's day, and was never REALLY overplayed enough to be sick of it except for automatic flower.....
their new stuff is still cool, you can tell that they have change musically though, mainly through lyrics,

really? I think the new stuff is absolute crap. Boring repetitive lyrics about cheesy overdone topics. I actually liked the old stuff though.

LeafHouse 04-15-2005 01:41 PM

Its the best music scene in the world at the moment. Pop Montreal makes me wet in special places. So many amazing bands play there it is unbelievable.

Heres some amazing bands that you've not listed!

The Arcade Fire
Wolf Parade
Frog Eyes
The New Pornographers
Destroyer
The Unicorns
Chromeo
Solvent
Pony Up!
The Unicorns / Th'Corn Gangg
The Barcelona Pavillion
They shoot horses don't they
Hank
The Dears
The Organ
The Pets / The Waking Eyes
The Lovely Feathers

.......and no, I'm not Canadian, I'm English. But I'd much prefer listening to the new stuff coming out of Canada, then the rehashed dull garbage from my own shores.

IMATOOL 04-15-2005 01:43 PM

Wow I though this disscusion was about POT. Now thats Cananda's finest.

ArtistInTheAmbulance 04-15-2005 01:45 PM

Is it just me that doesnt really think about where a band is from? Its just not really on the top of my list, if you see what I mean... I just listen to the music, I dont tend to read up on where bands are from...

LeafHouse 04-15-2005 01:49 PM

I don't read where they are from Artist, but it has got to the stage now where if someone says "Yeah they're from Montreal" then it means that I have to check them out. That used to be the case with Manchester circa 1990.

When I heard The Arcade Fire this time last year I knew that they would explode, they were too good to stay tiny. And I know that Wolf Parade are headed exactly the same way. When a band does something that is a lot better than what everyone else is doing, then its common sense. Location is irrelevant, but if the location defines the music, then it is important.

Canada is my favorite country making music right now. Constellation and Arts & Crafts records alone blow every other country out of the water. The only other country I like almost as much as Canada is Sweden, for their wonderful, wonderful Indie Pop bands.

IndiElectronica 01-08-2006 02:57 PM

I don't care where a band is from, but it's very interesting to follow the trends i think... most of my favorite music for the last few years has been from Scotland... but Canada has some very good music too... which is great as they've not had much good indie groups in the past..

Arcade Fire is THE BEST indie group on tour right now. period. Soulwax and Explosions in the Sky rounding out the top 3 live bands... do see them if you can!

Muzak Geek 01-08-2006 05:04 PM

How about adding these 3?…

The New Pornographers
Peaches
Our Lady Peace

Not necissarily my top 3, but still all Canadian, eh?

Laces Out Dan! 01-08-2006 06:55 PM

Rush
The Guess Who
BTO
Bryan Adams
Chilliwack
Red Rider

Music Director 01-08-2006 08:48 PM

How about Triumph? Also Neil Young is the best musical thing from Canada, IMO. :)

Laces Out Dan! 01-08-2006 09:28 PM

Forgot about him..you indeed are right....he is ONE of them

MURDER JUNKIE 01-08-2006 09:43 PM

Montreal has a HUGE ska scene, and Moon Ska records puts out some skankin canuck talent. The ska scene in Montreal is so huge that Catch 22 started their Canadian tour there and sold every piece of merch for the whole tour the first night!!!!

Trauma 01-09-2006 12:13 AM

The New Pornographers
Death From Above 1979
God Speed You Black Emperor
Jody Raffoul

And uhhh some that really don't qualify for Indie.
Our Lady Peace
Sum 41
Nelly Furtado
Alanis Morisette
Rush
The Band

coffeeshop 01-09-2006 02:24 PM

Arcade Fire without a doubt.

Sabgoat 01-09-2006 03:20 PM

i live in canada yet you've all heard of more bands then me..

but death from above are not my type of music yet i love them.. ifi'm in a ****ty mood there music cheers me up.. just so up beat compared to everything else i listen to.. and plus the dudes got a sexy voice!

MrFloyd 01-09-2006 06:05 PM

I really like stars, the new pornographers, death from above and the arcade fire. I am also a fan of the tragically hip and the guess who, also a big leonard cohen fan. BUT!!! My favorite canadian band/artist is my man , Neil Young who's from my hometown. His excellent guitar work and tremendous writting ability I believe will live on past his and our time.

Trauma 01-09-2006 06:14 PM

I concur.

jibber 01-09-2006 06:57 PM

I still can't make up my mind about arcade fire. Their lyrics are rediculous, some of the best songwriting i've seen in a while, and I just love it to death. I just can't make up my mind on whether or not I like the actual execution of the songs. I have their album, and some times I just can't quite get into it, but other times i really like the lack of structure that's apparent in a lot of tracks. Ok i'm confusing myself. maybe i'll listen to them again now and see if i can make up my mind.

Trauma 01-09-2006 08:28 PM

I concur.

half_baked87 01-09-2006 09:59 PM

does it have to be indie bands? because theres a lot of hella sweet bands from around my area, silverstein, grade, alexisonfire, the reason. theres more but im drawing a blank.
