tyondai braxton is a member of battles, and recently released the awesome album "central market" in 2009. i recommend the songs "platinum rows" and "J. city" (classical / experimental rock / ?) DON CABALLERO don caballero is a band that also has a member of battles, ian williams. go download "what burns never returns" and "American don", and don't download any albums after "american don" because they're not as good as the stuff ian williams worked on. check out their songs "room temperature suite" and "june is finally here" (math rock / post rock) MASERATI it's a post rock band, a damn good one, too. their album "inventions for the new season" is quite awesome. my favourite songs off of the album are "12 16", "the world outside" and "kalinichta" (post rock) AND SO I WATCH YOU FROM AFAR another post-rock band. starting to see a pattern? their self-titled album is really good and isn't just your average post-rock album, either. it's a really emotional, all-out instrumental rock explosion. it's been feature on many "best of 2009" lists. check out their songs "i capture castles" and "eat the city, eat it whole" (post rock, again) THIS TOWN NEEDS GUNS ANOTHER FREAKING POST ROCK/MATH ROCK BAND (but with vocals). their concept album "animals" is a sunny, math-fest that i really like. check out their songs "pig" and "panda" (math rock) SURFER BLOOD I usually hate those surf-rock acts, but i am a big fan of this group. i don't know why, though. their album "astro coast" is really fun and has been given great reviews. check out their songs "swim" and "harmonix" (surf rock) STEVE REICH i personally love minimalist elements in music, because the repetition makes it quite hypnotic. some of my favourite compositions by him are "music for 18 musicians", "electric counterparts" and "different trains" (minimalism / classical) sorry about the TL;DR-ness of it. i couldn't say it in any fewer words. oh well. enjoy. |

|
I love An Horse, they are amazing. I would suggest...well Tegan and Sara but I'm sure you already know them...umm...Iron On, Tender Forever, Rachael Cantu, maybe One For The Team.
|
^Thank you! I haven't heard of Iron On, Tender Forever, or One For The Team - but I will certainly check them out.

I'm looking for bands that sound like the Libertines and Death Cab anything would be great.
|
I listened to Bertie Blackman recently...I like her song 'Byrds of Prey'...sounds a lot like Muse...but her songs have more percussion in them...more tribal drums...

Progressive experimental Post Hardcore
Learning. Just wondering how you folks in alternative and indie land feel about this title. What's the scene in New York City and around the country.
And, has there been a festival in this genre lately. Who are the go to people in this arena. Are musicians making any money, or are you still doing the starving artists deal? Be kind. |
So, I'm big into Indie/Alternative music myself, and I know this guy isn't really either of those, but he's pretty good! Newer artist on Decca Records. Just found his new video on Youtube. The name's Brendan James.

Anyone know of any bands that have pop and funk elements like the chili peppers, plus a jazz influence?
For example, maybe like the band 'Jazz Pistols' with vocals (for example) any ideas? |

like this? |

i guess im looking for a band very similar to red hot chili peppers that also incorporates jazzy chords and maybe some improvised soloing, etc |

Just discovered Nico Stai. Dunno if anyone has mentioned him here earlier, but his song "One October song" really got to me. His voice is awesome!

Also I assume you've heard of MGMT if you're writing posts on a music forum, but if not they're really similar to the kinds of music you're talking about. Also Also, try The Virgins. "Rich Girls". This band is essentially The Strokes. |

My top artists according to last.fm over the past 7 days; I reccomend these:
Young Man Los Campesinos! Grizzly Bear Pink Floyd Led Zeppelin Beach Fossils Slow Club The Velvet Underground guards Nick Drake Bob Dylan Tame Impala The Rolling Stones Toro y Moi |
I am really into the discovered but under appreciated musicians in the Indie/Alternative area. I guess right now I'm looking for a female singer that would have the same effect on the soul as Ani Difranco. Also, for a male artist.. anyone who could follow Noah Gundersen would just absolutely melt my soul. Not really looking for bands though, unless you've got one to recommend that would be utterly mind blowing. Just solo artists who've got the right feel. Anyone?
|
I've listened to a Noah Gunderson on Youtube and he kinda sounded like Sufjan Stevens (in case you haven't listened to him before)

The Rural Alberta Advantage
