EDIT: Some people think Okkervil River is better, but I have to disagree - Shearwater has a much more varied sound than Okkervil does. |
Cool, thanks Jackpat.
Both on my spotify playlist now. |

Good freestyle soundtrack stuff
For hiking, biking, skiing, or driving I like some of the jams from North of 90 - a garage band (indie) from Alaska.
(not for everyone, but I like it.) |

Hey all!
Okay, suppose you wanted to make a mix tape for a road trip down the California Coast. Consider the following song as your model: Yo La Tengo - Today is the Day. Acoustic, slow, downbeat, very very very calm. As calm as possible. Sentimental. Lyrics-oriented. Guitars. Quiet. Indie is good. Can you recommend a few songs like this? I need to make a 12-15 song mix CD. I want her to love it. Other songs to give you direction: The XX - VCR. Damien Rice - Volcano. People she generally likes (but ideally few or very obscure songs from these people): Bonnie Prince Billy, Yo La Tengo, Sufjan Stevens, The XX, Damien Rice, Jose Gonzalez, Neutral Milk Hotel, Wilco, Sun Kill Moon, Bright Eyes, etc. |
^ She might like Belle and Sebastian
Beach House? Mew? Seabear! Dr Dogggg Villagers Pinback Mercury Rev |
Jeremy Messersmith - Organ Donor
Ben Kweller - Falling Just two that sprang to mind. |

trying to find a song name or artist
i heard a song several years ago. i dont remember who it was or what it was called. it was a live acoustic duet w/ some guy and girl singing. it had like a semi funky indie soul coffee shop sound too it, bongo drum and upright bass maybe. the only lyric i remember is halfway through the song he says something like "i know he was with you last night because i heard you call his name" and the girl sings "Oh my god". i was thinking maybe ben harper but i couldnt find it on any of his songs i looked up. i know its not much to work with but if anyone could help me i would appreciate it. thanks.

I'm looking for something that doesn't sound like The National, but would appeal to someone in that frame of mind. Just a band that would sit well with The National which means it could compliment them I suppose. Doth anyone know what I'm talking about?
|
I wish there was an Indie and Alternative album club.

It was a bit hard to understand exactly what you wanted and you've probably heard all or some of the ones I've mentioned. These are just some off the top of my head. |
I suspected you would say Bon Iver on account of your user name.
I like St Vincent, and well I don't know if they're considered Indy but City and Color? The National kind of remind me of a really calm version of an Aussie band called Eskimo Joe. Er, you could also try The Smiths.. though upon reflection that's probably pretty far fetched but oh well it's worth a shot. Or even The Editors? |

Hey guys.
I need some suggestions for some alternative/indie bands that are loud, noisy, spastic, or crazy. Some groups that make you want to physically start freaking out, or at least have some songs that do. I'm really not into a lot of alternative, but I'm trying to get into it. I really, REALLY like The Black Keys and Cage The Elephant. Aside from that, I listen to a ton of different genres, so bands that mix genres are awesome. Thanks for the help. :) |
Bands like Cows, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Pussy Galore, Brainiac, Boss Hog, godheadSilo, Jawbox and Butthole Surfers may appeal?

Of that whole list I was only really very enthusiastic about Boss Hog. They were pretty awesome.
I also found Rocket From The Crypt on accident as a similar artist to... somebody. Anyway, they were freakin' awesome, so thanks for suggesting them cause I found a band I DO really like, even if it wasn't on your list. Hahahahaha. Thanks for the help, guys. :) |
Dont give up on bands like Cows (get Cunning Stunts, seriously great album) and Jon Spencer (Extra Width), they do not always sit well with the listener initially but, given a few listens, it hits home.

Im really into indie bands but lately have had a hard time coming by any new ones. I know indie can range into a wide variety of genre's but im more into indie folk/pop. Keep it on the lighter side of things.
:) |
here's some good indie pop:
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend The Unicorns - Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone? Pinback - Summer In Abaddon Beck - Odelay Built To Spill - Keep It Like A Secret MGMT - Congratulations Neutral Milk Hotel - On Avery Island (not so light, but it's worth hearing) Pixies - Doolittle R.E.M. - Murmur TV On The Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain Wolf Parade - Apologies To The Queen Mary |
