Well, the Beatles we're shooting for their own independence until they found out they made lousy businessmen. Enter Allen Klein and you can figure out the rest.
No, I don't think the Beatles (or anyone in the late sixties for that matter) saw themselves as indie artists. While they obviously didn't want to be told what to do by the studio (and they were fortunate to have an ally like George Martin), they nonetheless played ball when it came to having an album ready as per their contract. Touring was a bigger problem for them and you may notice much of the best material came after they gave touring up. So, no, I don't call the Beatles an indie band in the classic sense, though they, along with Dylan and the Beach Boys (or at least Brian Wilson anyway), would be a big influence on the DIY crowd as early as the late seventies. |

I'll join in...as a newbie, I cannot post Youtube/Bandcamp links, so you'll have to Google yourselves, but, here goes....
THE POP GUNS - Waiting For The Winter This one is sort of janglepop/indiepop but with a little bit of a new wave twist. A breakup/gone away to college ending. "Six weeks gone and not a word / This means the end, I never should have held a hope...." The Popguns have an utter knack for going straight for the gut, whether falling in love, breaking up, even drunken pulls. Then there's "Still Waiting For The Winter", a song of wistful yearning down the years (this one actually made me cry), an slightly older perspective, a flame long held.....and still an emotional punch in the gut!!! FRISBEES IN THE FOG - Finale Utterly gorgeous shoegaze/dream pop and an even more gorgeous female voice...apparantly a soundtrack to a secret short film that may or may not exist.... BEANS ON TOAST - Chessington World Of Adventures Political singer songwriter...essentially a on man band...imagine Robb Johnson (who you should also check out if unfamiliar) singing Billy Bragg songs and you're half way there. This one takes on the utter balls up the UK tory government made of covid 19. |
