Well, this sure sounds encouraging.

Which album?

Hello, all. A couple of members recommended Tame Impala on this thread, and I was wondering which album to start with. Thanks.

There's only two albums so far - Innerspeaker (2010) and Lonerism (2012). They're not all that different from each other, so it probably doesn't matter too much which one you listen to first. The main difference between the two is, Innerspeaker is perhaps just a tad more "retro" than Lonerism, as Lonerism has just a tad more synthesizer stuff. But the differences aren't major.

They also have an EP which came out in 2008. It was intended just as a demo not for public consumption, but it's got some good stuff anyway. They also have a single which came out in 2010 (see top of page 7).

Here's two good early songs which didn't make it onto either of their albums. Not sure I've linked these here yet.

This first one is a really fun song!

Really retro sound to this one.

Y'know I had never heard that MJ song before. Not a huge MJ fan but this is a pretty good song. TA does a nice job of covering it:

Saw them at Primavera for the first time last year and thought they were pretty good, but I wasn't blown away, but I've gotten more into them since then. They're definitely a grower!

Tired Angels 04-26-2014 06:22 AM

If anyone likes Flaming Lips they did a collaboration with them last year called Children of the Moon. The guitar sound is phenomenal! Worth a listen.

I really dig this band. When I first heard them I coulda sworn it was John Lennon reincarnated! HAH!

fractalign 05-08-2014 08:10 AM

I don't know why they get so much press. They are just a rehashed Wolf & Cub as far as I am concerned !

DriveYourCarDownToTheSea 09-06-2014 05:21 PM

Even Gene Simmons likes Tame Impala!

Though he doesn't seem to like much else these days.

I think "Elephant" is a very cool song, but all of their other stuff is a little bland to me. Anyone else think that Kevin Parker sounds exactly like John Lennon?

Yes! When I first heard them, it felt like I was listening to some unreleased Beatles material from 1967. It's positively eerie.

Well, at least we know he's working on his next album (and has been for some time). He just doesn't know when it'll be done.

Q&A: Tame Impala Talk New Album, Music in Ads, ‘Brooklyn Patch’ Rumors
Quote:

So, where are you in the next album’s process at this point?

It’s hard for me to say. For me, I’m working on it all the time and I’m so involved in it, that it’s almost impossible to tell how far away it is from being finished. I’m always adding things to it and taking things away. It’s like a piece of clay, slowly shaping into something. You could just stop at any moment and it would be finished. It would be something. It would be a sculpture or a bowl or whatever. And you could keep fingering it forever, and it wouldn’t necessarily be more finished or better. It is just up to you to decide when that piece of clay is something. That’s sort of how it is with me. I’ll start working on a song, and in a couple hours, it’s a song, it can be listened to. I can work on it another six months, or I can not work on it at all. It literally comes down to… I don’t know what it comes down to. A deadline I guess.

In writing school, there was a saying, that a great poem is never finished, it’s abandoned. That kinda follows what you are saying.

Yeah, that one resonates. I know exactly what you mean.

Are you using the same kind of process, as you did with Lonerism and Innerspeaker, where you recorded primarily by yourself?

Similar. Each time I do an album, I have slightly more of a clue what I’m doing. I have a slightly more professional approach each time. It’s like I know how to use the tools in my shed. It’s like I’m a carpenter, and I know how to use my tools more intimately than before. Before I was a kid in a toolshed banging away until something happened. Now, I can see how a tool would work. That’s a pretty sketchy, terrible analogy.

I dig. Caught them at Glastonbury.

New Tame Impala song from their next album!
Tame Impala Share "Let It Happen", Announce Tour | News | Pitchfork

Very different from his previous stuff, much more disco/80's-techno sounding.

Also a big North American tour announced.

Plainview 03-10-2015 03:06 PM

It's familiar, but definitely an 80s vibe, no bad thing. I'm digging it.

DriveYourCarDownToTheSea 03-10-2015 03:14 PM

Having just listened to it a second time, it occurred to me maybe he's trying to compete with Daft Punk? In his own way.

But it's only one song, will have to wait to see what the rest of the album sounds like.

Seems decidedly more pop-oriented and I'm not sure I like that. They already have a very studio polished sound and I worry about this album. Too much electronic stuff going on too, but it's not like they were ever a raw psych band anyway.

DriveYourCarDownToTheSea 03-10-2015 06:44 PM

Hmmm. According to this
Quote:

Representatives for the band have stressed that this new swirling synth-led adventure is not the first single from the band's forthcoming album, the follow-up to 2012's Lonerism, but instead a track just for fans.
So maybe it's not from the new album?

That said, it makes me wonder if that's the direction the new album might go anyway. I wonder if this was maybe a "leftover" track from recording sessions for the album, and he/they decided to release it as a standalone single?

Anyway we'll find out eventually.

I disagree, I thought Lonerism was no less poppy than this track. Lonerism was totally a pop album as far as the song structures were concerned, except they were pop songs stretched and embellished with psychedelic edge. I don't feel this is really any different in that sense. Definitely a slicker production, but that was entirely expected after the popularity of the previous album, wasn't it?

Pet_Sounds 03-11-2015 11:15 AM

Must admit, I like the direction he's going. Kevin Parker doing psychedelic synthpop would be mindblowing.

Habitband 03-16-2015 01:02 PM

Im with Sidewinder. It seems Kev is hanging out with Mark Ronson too much.

I can't wait for the new album!

I'm really into all their previous material, and after listening to the new tracks, I'm a quite curious about how the new album will be!

Oh, hey, I'm listening to Lonerism right now.

The current issue of Under the Radar has an interview with Kevin Parker, a must-read if you're a Tame Impala fan. He's definitely branching out, the two new songs released for the new album definitely give you a sample of what the rest of the album is like ... though he also said it's his most diverse album yet.

Excerpt:
"All this maturation isn't just a sign of personal maturation; Parker says it's a necessity if he's going to continue to push himself to grow as an artist. He knows he could churn out psych-pop epics for the rest of his life, but he'd be bored and soon his listeners would be, too."

So I guess we can start to expect the unexpected on future albums.

PayolaDeath 04-29-2015 12:14 PM

Coachella

I can't wait to see what direction the rest of their album is going in. It seems like it will be more electronic music influenced. Also, anyone hear about the Jamie XX/Coachella controversy about playing "let it happen"?

And yet another song from the upcoming album.

My initial reaction is about the same as my reaction to the other 2 - meh. Not really my thing.
