Tame Impala

Tame Impala are a three piece psychedelic rock band from Australia who I am really getting into at the moment after having the chance to see them live a while ago. They're also quite young too so kudos to them.

Go check them out and let me know what you think!

Seltzer 05-19-2010 02:49 AM

I just listened to those two songs and while they may not win awards for originality, their music strikes me as a pleasant and dreamy throwback to 60s psychedelia, and the last one is quite reminiscent of Cream. I think I'll check out one of their EPs. I imagine they'd put on a good live show too.

That is EXACTLY what I thought when I first heard them - very reminiscent of Cream. They do put on a very good show though and are quite enjoyable regardless.

Ah another fine band from Perth, fertile ground this is...

James 05-21-2010 09:01 AM

This is great i'm gonna get an album, I think over the next decade there will be a psychedelic revival at some point.

I've been listening to them for the past few days. Good band, easy to get into, though i agree with the lack of originality thing. I love their drum beats~

Agree, I reckon psychedelic would be returning soon to the mainstream, perhaps combined with electronica or avant-garde

BubbaMc 06-01-2010 11:11 PM

I've had their album for a while now, never get sick of it.

I've heard a lot of people say this about them, but have always been quite shocked, as I have always thought of their song-writing as very impressive, and then add to that the superb recording quality they achieve. I'm from Perth and just came across this thread accidentally (surprising to see there is a topic on them here!). I'm still blown away each time I listen to "Sundown Syndrome"; and I think those guys have been a huge influence on the way I write and record songs and search for the bigger groove. I'd love one day to make music as good as these guys, but I am pretty biased (I think they rule haha).
cheers.

adidasss 07-28-2010 12:03 AM

I've been completely obsessing over them for the past few days...

SATCHMO 07-28-2010 01:21 AM

It's amazing that these guys can draw so heavily on the 60's psychedelic era and still manage to sound as fresh and relevant as they do. There's really nothing cliche about this. Their songwriting is superb and the recording is excellent. This is far from being the style of music that I normally listen to, but these guys are great.

Flyingpig437 09-02-2010 01:22 PM

I heard their song Runaway, houses, city, clouds on the radio through a bit of a haze of alchol and though it was pretty blissful but on relisteing to it it's only the end bit I like and that sounds like a bit of a rip-off of countless other similar songs. The one that most springs to mind is the Tommy segment from Focus's Eruption thing.

TOYS 09-17-2010 04:13 PM

I've been loving this band recently; Half Full Glass of Wine and Sundown Syndrome are beautiful songs.

Seltzer 09-27-2010 02:19 AM

After listening to Innerspeaker and their EP a few more times since, I can only say that Tame Impala gets better with every listen. They clicked with me one evening when I was lounging down the back of a bus, exhausted after a long day's work, with nothing but their music and a fresh breeze blowing over me. Cheesy I know, but these moments are great.

These are definitely moments that are Tame Impala moments! I'm glad I'm not the only one who is digging this band!

adidasss 09-27-2010 11:32 AM

Great when you're high too....;)

Deakin18 11-24-2010 01:22 AM

Tame Impala is a very good band with some great promise. Musicly they are solid, and the vocals are really nice. I see a possibly good future for this band.

MagicMan 11-24-2010 12:22 PM

These guys are pretty awesome. Sound similar to bands like Cream but they do have their own sound. They seem like a healthy mix of psychedelic and maybe a little indie feel as well.

Astronomer 11-24-2010 02:56 PM

Reeaaally digging Tame Impala (again) at the moment. If you still haven't gotten into them... you should.

duga 11-24-2010 08:38 PM

Innerspeaker is going in my top 3 of the year for sure. I was already in a heavy 60s psych kick earlier this year and when I heard these guys it was one of those speechless moments where I was listening to exactly what my ears wanted to hear. Within a month of discovering these guys they went up to over 100 plays on my last.fm. Everyone should listen to these guys.

I can't wait to hear what else they can do. I just don't want this to be another Wolfmother thing where everyone goes "ohh retro" and then we all forget about them.

zachsd 11-24-2010 08:56 PM

Yeah, when Innerspeaker came out earlier this year it kind of threw me into a 60s psychedelic throw back. Pulled out my copy of Revolver and Surrealistic Pillow and started getting into Brian Jonestown Massacre's psych stuff, particularly Satanic Majesties' Second Request.

But yeah, Tame Impala is excellent. Their vocals are really good, the voice kind of reminds me of Lennon, but not a carbon-copy like some people I talk to like to suggest. Earlier today I bought the EP they released before Innerspeaker and was pleasantly surprised by the songs I wasn't familiar with, they also go for a more lo-fi sound in the EP which is interesting. I'm glad they didn't stick with that sound for Innerspeaker though, I don't think it would've worked out as well.

Looking forward to seeing them when they come to LA this December.

I am glad we all forgot about Wolfmother. Very, very glad. In fact why did you have to remind me of them?!

But yeah, hoping to catch Tame Impala a few times hopefully over the summer at some of our music festivals! They're bound to make an appearance somewhere.

s_k 11-25-2010 06:46 AM

I've been thinking about my top 3 but there's still very good albums being made these last months.
Is there a top of the year topic every year here? Or should I create one?

duga 11-25-2010 11:03 AM

There will be plenty of those, don't worry. We will try to make an official one.

s_k 11-25-2010 06:29 PM

I was planning to stick around anyway, so I'll see them coming :)

Dotoar 12-26-2010 10:39 AM

Such a great band! I was quite surprised to have them recommended by a friend, since it's usually the opposite . They stuck immediately for reasons that have already been explained in this thread. Old school but still fresh, simply put.

And for anyone into them I can highly recommend the swedish band Dungen which is pretty much in the same style, although they have been around for quite a while now. Check out the albums "Stadsvandringar", "Ta det lugnt", "Tio bitar" and "4".

iamthewalrus 01-09-2011 04:03 PM

I am absolutely in love with Tame Impala.<3

cupkayke 01-10-2011 10:31 AM

Normally I lurk, but this band is truly amazing. I've only been listening to Innerspeaker and for as many songs I have gone through, I can honestly say I don't skip through. It's astounding to me because Radiohead is on average the one band I can do that with. I hope they have a promising, good career.

sidewinder 02-04-2011 07:50 PM

Regarding the locked Tame Impala thread...how about merging duplicate topics instead of just locking them? Seems like a waste of potentially good posts. The thread is in Indie & Alternative, btw - I didn't create it, just replied in it then it got locked.

(I see this happen a lot with various band topics, that's why I felt like saying something ;) )

Astronomer 02-04-2011 07:54 PM

Normally they do get merged, don't they? Anyway I saw Tame Impala live for the first time since they became quite 'big' and I was sorely disappointed :( They used to be really great to see live. This last time they were flat and didn't sound great at all.

jackhammer 02-04-2011 08:09 PM

I have to say that I am not that impressed with them. Perfectly listenable but certainly nothing special.

Depends on the mod, I guess. I've seen about 3 in the past week just get locked.

Great song, but ... can't ... resist.

^Edit: That vid is also really cool on full-screen mode.

Nikole2718 10-08-2013 10:36 PM

Awesome!

DriveYourCarDownToTheSea 10-13-2013 09:13 PM

BTW I'm going to make a daring (longish-term) prediction: Especially if this band can come out with a really good album their next album, I think they might become as popular as Oasis, or even U2. All the ingredients are there, not the least of which is a sound even a lot of Baby Boomers can get into.

You heard it here first. :)
