Florence and the Machine

Not seeing anything on them so...

From the Wiki...
Quote:

Florence and the Machine (sometimes stylised as Florence + the Machine)[2] is the recording name of Rock [1] English artist Florence Welch and a collaboration of other artists who provide backing music for her voice. Florence and the Machine's sound has been described as a combination of various genres, including rock and soul.[3] The band's music has received praise across the music media before they gained mainstream success, especially from the BBC who played a large part in Florence and the Machine's rise to prominence by promoting her as part of BBC Introducing.[4]

The band's debut album, Lungs was released on 6 July 2009, and held the No. 2 position for its first five weeks in the UK Album Chart.[5] On 17 January 2010, the album reached No. 1 on the UK album chart, having remained in the chart for 28 consecutive weeks up until that point.[6] The album has been within the top 40 in the United Kingdom for 52 consecutive weeks, making it one of the best selling albums of 2009 and 2010 so far. At the 2010 BRIT Awards, Lungs won the "Mastercard British Album" award.[7]
I'm hearing this song and I don't think its for me. I was saying the other day, having heard that Neon Tree's song "Animal" that this would be the year Indie went commercial. I don't know if its true but corporate America seems to have figured out something of a formula and I see that formula being applied here as well. Not to mention the lead singer (who I assume is Florence) looks like Tori Amos in this video.

Also, this came out in 2009? Adidasss - you dropped the ball on this one.

Besides the fact you made a mistake on the thread title...I really like Florence and the Machine, Lungs was one of my favorite albums of 2009 and she has a gorgeous voice, and everything is so bombastic.

What?

CanwllCorfe 07-28-2010 09:48 AM

I really liked Cosmic Love but not much else.

And I think he's referring to the fact that you wrote Machines instead of Machine

I hope to Christ that's not what he meant. Who leads off a thread with such pedantic snark?

Discuss the music, the mods can change the title.

TheCunningStunt 07-28-2010 10:22 AM

I like Lungs, it isn't a bad album at all.

Great song.

I didn't really like the album. ;) But it is surprising that no one's made a thread about them till now...

downwardspiral 07-28-2010 11:42 AM

i dont mind her, but her voice was ridiculously crap at glastonbury this year. it could possibly have been because she was crazy excited and jumping about on stage cos she pulled a massive crowd. though i've heard a few people say that she's been underwhelming live, which is a shame cos she could do magical things with that voice.

The implication that its pluralized incorrectly only highlights your limited knowledge of machines in general. Unless it could double as Florence and the Can-opener, lever, pulley or some other simple machine, there's almost an inferred complexity to Florence's machine. Therefore, her machine houses many smaller machines within it and I for one think its ****ing rude to say to those other smaller machines that they are worth a damn, you miserable Tory.

I'd demand an apology but the 2020 uprising of the cyborgs will find you with all the justice you might otherwise require.

@ Adidasss - it means a lot to me that we hate the same album. Also, look up dyslexia.

@ CunningStunt - Its impressive you can read the title, but not the second post in the thread. I understand your priorities are snark-over-substance...but the second post? Rough man.

I love Florence + the Machine. I heard her music a few years ago on Skins and downloaded the album to see what it was like. It was pretty fantastic, and coincidentally, I'm going to her concert tonight :D

I didnt realise people on here didnt mind her. From what I hear, you either love her or hate her.

Goblin Tears 07-28-2010 05:24 PM

Her album is okay...I love Rabbit Heart. But I do agree with comments that Florence could be key in boosting the commercial viability of indie music. Considering it's a genre that capitalizes on catchy hooks (albeit of acoustic construction) it was only a matter of time.

Personally, she reminds me a little of Siouxsie & The Banshees, although I obviously much prefer said band.

TumorAttitude 08-04-2010 03:35 AM

yeah, Indie went commercial, but the hook from "Dog Days" is so damn catchy that I'm not even sad.
Florence herself is kind of a generic mix of Zooey Deshenel and Jenny Lewis, although she seems to be a better singer then both....

James 08-04-2010 06:20 PM

She's okay, aside from the music she has killer legs.

blanket 01-27-2011 05:50 AM

Florence and the Machine is my favourite band ever. I looove Florence so much. I love everything she's done, I can't choose a favourite song.

The Batlord 01-27-2011 01:41 PM

I haven't listened to much of them, but I'm listening to them right now, and I approve. Of course, I love most anything with a female vocalist.

Simmi 02-24-2011 05:46 PM

Florence and the Machine is an awesome band, I really like their first album + they keep playing that band on the radio so hear that band a lot..

Scarlett O'Hara 02-25-2011 09:50 PM

Love love love. I've completely punished her album and am really looking forward to her next release. What a voice!

Flume 02-26-2011 12:27 PM

I've seen them live twice, some pretty good shows. So be sure to catch 'em if they play close to you and it isn't too expensive.

allhallows337 09-19-2011 08:59 AM

Her voice is like no other. It's so powerful and just beautiful. She's a very very VERY talented woman and Lungs is a great album. Definitely a top recommendation of mine.

fybea 11-12-2011 02:03 AM

I admit that I got Rick Rolled...

I think F&tM is a product of the mainstream factory of catchy hooks, not to say that her music isn't worth bobbing my head to and I do enjoy Dog Days, but still like you guys said, she's "underwhelming." Honestly, Foster the People and their overplayed "Pumped up Kicks" is doing a better job of pushing "Indie" to the mainstream audience than Florence Welch is doing.

FETCHER. 11-12-2011 02:09 AM

I seen her live on tv @ ibiza rocks and she was literally show stopping but it was a small crowd. But still.

Paedantic Basterd 11-12-2011 01:14 PM

Spoiler for ceremonials:
HEEEY WUU EEEEEEEY EEEYHAAAy.

Xseption 11-14-2011 09:05 PM

I liked cosmic love a lot and heavy heart.
Other than that not much there for me.
I really couldn't stand "Dog Days"

CRAZY-HORSE 11-14-2011 10:46 PM

she has made two bloody good albums...and she doesnt need to remove her clothes in order to sell records!

FETCHER. 11-15-2011 11:08 AM

^amen sista.

Goofle 11-17-2011 08:29 AM

I like her a lot. I imagine her to be sort of what Lady Gaga could have been if she wanted more than just fame.

Massively over played though.

sweetbutter87 11-18-2011 07:51 PM

Do you consider Florence & The Machine a "diva"?

Goofle 11-19-2011 06:39 AM

Yeah, course she is.

Bloody†Mary 11-19-2011 08:33 PM

Ceremonials is an amazing album, she has such a beautiful voice!

Howard the Duck 11-21-2011 05:43 AM

got "Lungs" but didn't really like it upon first listen

i feel that this is something that needs time to grow on me

Alexthe4th 11-29-2011 08:55 AM

I'm really into the whole eighties revival thing, I'm a sucker for gated drums and reverb. I like what Florence is doing with that kind of vibe, in a somewhat more modern way. There is lots of this type of sound going on in the indie world but of course hers is much more polished.

FETCHER. 12-05-2011 03:59 PM

^this. Exactly this.

TheBig3 12-15-2011 01:00 PM

I expect this group to produce magic for a good deal of time. She's not the best writer I've ever heard, but she knows what she's doing and I don't find myself wondering if it took her 30 seconds to write it.

This may sound like a low bar, but for me its the mark of an artist who takes their job seriously. I might <3 Florence. I might.

Howard the Duck 12-16-2011 12:35 AM

i just got Ceremonials and i like it better than the debut

the best songs are the strident, galloping songs

the moody ones aren't that good, though

Goofle 01-06-2016 08:29 AM

Been enjoying Lungs recently. Non stop barrage of great songs. She has an amazing voice.

SuperSymmetry 01-17-2016 09:25 PM

Her stuff is pretty hit-or-miss for me. But when it hits, boy does it hit.

TySoMuch 02-08-2016 07:17 AM

Her stage moves are quite impressive aha

Bird Song, is one of my favorite tracks from the entire album. It should have been on the regular release.

Got into this band not long ago. I've got their two first albums, but haven't heard the new one.

Good songs, good voice. Pretty much in line with a bunch of other things I'm listening to these days, so I'm not surprised I clicked with it.
