i just don't know what they are about.how they identify themselves these days ? who are these wankers
|
Nobody walks into a room and declares "EFF YEaH im InDiE!!!"
it's a fashion choice, it's a taste in specific music, it's an aesthetic that people go by. They aren't nessicarily even politcal. They don't have to reject established society. Comparing every cultural movement to "hippies" makes you sound like you're 68 years old. |
Do you have to be middle class ? or middleclass aspiring to be workingclass . what is INDIE ?

So what's the enduring theme of indie fashion /asthetic/music ? could you describe it.i ask as an old oasis fan |
These days, "Indie" is a Hipster's shorthand for what was once known as College Rock. It used to mean a way of doing business while trying to avoid the influence of major label suits, but sadly those days are over it seems.
|
so it's wanky little posh kids trying to rebelilous, unless conan can defend himself
|
Defend myself? I didn't even know we were arguing.
And no, the definition of indie isn't people that you don't like. I'm mobile right now and I would link you some examples to music and style and stuff but it's really hard to on here so I'll let someone else take care of it. I definetly wouldn't keep taking the arrogant high ground if I were you because it's clear you don't know what you're talking about. |
Wow... Really? Another thread stereotyping people?
|
you stereo type yourself by joining an indie forum.and by the look of it,cant fathom why.indie seems one rizla paper above the pop crowd in a disco.back in my day we had happy mondys stone roses oasis, today you got what ?
|
This isn't an indie forum though.
|
This is far from being an indie forum..
|
The stone roses were sh*t. ;)
|
It seems he wants to talk about The Stone Roses, Oasis & Happy Mondays.
Conan, you better have a word with the admin & ask him to open up that 'Outdated Pub Rock' forum. |
Probably a troll.

They may not be overtly political, but by their own ethos you could surmise their position on political issues. That may seem too distant, but the Christian Right had no overt political positions once upon a time. Its a value system that they have and it would likely be small-government. As for establish society, I think they reject the value system of established society. They don't like bands often times beyond seemingly arbitrary points because of what they perceive as an aesthetic position. They could easily be issue voters. And every sub-culture movement is going to have anti-establishment views, thats why they have a different fashion/music/ethos to them. They think its correct. And if they shared the values of the mainstream, we likely wouldn't have a name for them. |
Right. I meant more as for goes the comparison the the hippies of the 1960s, which I imagine the comparison was made because they seemed to kore fully "reject" established society and in some cases live on their own in family farms and what not. Whereas I don't think of those you'd typically personify as 'indie' would go as far as that because their beliefs are generally not as strong with those issues.
|
Oh in that regard, sure. I feel like "indie" as a movement is closely aligned with what folks here might call "americanism." You know, doing it for yourself, going on merit, the whole 9.
Maybe I've been listening to too much Springsteen. Only his first EP though. |
who said the hippies had the strength to reject society? maybe a few of them, sure. but if you talk to people that were around back then, the only thing they rejected was reality... and when the drugs wore off, they had to count on society to lend them a hand in acquiring more.
now they all rely on society to fill their land rovers with gasoline and their children's heads with bullsh*t. |

Yes indie people are obviously stoned, peace-loving long-hairs. Or maybe not.

Hairspray is the holy water of indie? Who is this ****ing broad? First of all its not glam metal, *******. Also, everyone knows that the Holy Water would be PBR.
|
How err... how does one recognize an 'indie'?

I don't think I'd ever define anyone as a hippie.
I have the old vans though. Well, they're not old. But they look old. I **** them up in less than a year. |

To be quite honest, though, "new" hippies and hipsters really aren't that far apart. In fact, for the most part I've known them to coexist peacefully.
|
Wow, is that video real?
|
I'm thread closin' finger is itchin'.
|
Then scratch it and close the thread...
|
People are people, not class systems or sub groups even if they aspire to be that. I hate being called a ****ing hippie by people. Apparently if you are good natured, do pschedelic art, have longish curly hair and eat lots of fruit you are a hippie.

Do not insult hippies like that. |
