my girlfriend hates indie rock

In my opinion, it doesn't matter what genre she is into, just that it is not that top 40 nonsense. That in itself proves that she doesn't have to be told what to like, but that she can find joy in the music that truly pleases her. She doesn't have to like the same type of music as me, just so long as it is not strictly main stream!

I think that music is such a key component of my life that I would find I had little to share with someone who couldn't appreciate it as I do. There are few avenues of my life I am truly passionate about, and I can't imagine what kind of foundation a companionship would have if it lacked such an important aspect of my daily life.

Problem is, I couldn't live with someone who's into trance or R&B or something like that. Just because I cannot stand it. But I do see your point

I would highly recommend...breaking up! You would be amazed what a huge divide that can become if your relationship continues. Speaking from experience.

One of you will have to give in...and unless you can imagine liking Britney Spears, I would recommend getting out while it's still easy.
