it's not a modern phenomenon

pop in this context seems to mean accessibility, which a lot of things go into I suppose

The closest they came I think is with Damaged goods.

It's funky and kind of fun but for me even this isn't hugely memorable. My brain just looks for more melody I guess, which is what the mid 00s "hipster bandwagon bands" managed to do.
Lack of melody is not a feature of post punk. It is often a feature of Gang of Four, at least when it comes to the vocals (the guitars are sharp and clear and can be melodic I think). But like Bat said they still have plenty of hooks, in the case of Outside the Trains Don't Run on Time it's mostly the incredible dynamic between percussion, guitar and vocals. It's full of really powerful memorable moments, especially the bit around 0:35 lives in my mind rent free. And this just happens to be my favourite, but other GoF songs are even catchier.

Curious, it was in my mind, but doing a bit of googling, post-punk bands include the Talking heads and The Cure?? Which are indeed full of melody.

Goes to show how little I know about music. :/

Anyways, different strokes re:GoF catchiness.

Yeah exactly. Or to name some other ones that can be very melodic and /or jangly: the Raincoats, Girls at our Best, the Monochrome Set, the Wedding Present, you could even say the Smiths are post punk.

Never heard of those bands, apart from The Smiths of course. I'll give them a try

I liked Entertainment and Solid Gold so much that I kind of never got past those two albums. Great band, I'm hoping to find some more good tunes in their later work, but after Solid Gold they kind of went in a direction that didn't appeal to me all that much.
