Britpop

All the talk about the 20th anniversary of various albums has me feeling nostalgic - first it was NIN and The Downward Spiral, now Blur's Parklife. I had a huge thing for britpop in the 90's, everything from Suede and Saint Etienne to The Verve and Spiritualized. Oddly enough, I never cared all that much for Oasis, but Pulp is a band I love to this day...Different Class in particular.

What were some of your favorite albums? Favorite songs? Who would you consider the best or most influential artists of that time?

Janszoon 04-30-2014 12:45 AM

I literally have never heard a britpop album that I found to be listenable all the way through but I'm fond of some singles by Oasis, Blur, Suede and Travis.

Goofle 04-30-2014 02:07 AM

Anyone else really dislike the term "Britpop"?

I know right? It just doesn't sound good at all.

Not really knowledgable on Britpop bands, but, I do like The Verve, Oasis, Blur, Pulp and SULK.

I can listen to, 'Graceless,' the whole way through.

For me the term just makes it easier to lump bands like the Spice Girls or S Club 7 in with the ones we're discussing. Not that I'm right of course, that's just my opinion.

Paedantic Basterd 04-30-2014 02:08 PM

I ****ing love Pulp.

I could actually take or leave most of the rest, as I find the remainder a bit hit/miss. The major albums don't seem to settle enough on one idea for my enjoyment. For example, the clownish interludes on Parklife inhibit my ability to enjoy the whole album as one unit.

Yes! The actual song Parklife just makes me cringe.

I genuinely liked Suede a lot, even though I couldn't listen to any of their albums all the way through and enjoy every song. Dog Man Star and Coming Up were their best releases IMO. Sadly, as much as I love Pulp I have no interest in the stuff they released after This Is Hardcore, there are good tracks here and there but I just couldn't get into any of the later albums that much.

Love that song. It just gives me such good visuals of day-to-day life. It's fun and dumb, but charming in a weird kind of way.

I've noticed quite a lot of britpop nostalgia creeping in of late. I started paying attention to music during the britpop era, taping songs off the radio and all that jazz. Oasis were practically the biggest thing on the planet here for a period and (What's the Story) Morning Glory? was the first album I ever had. There was also a lot of crap getting media attention and heavy radio play during the britpop era as well, stuff like Dodgy, The Lightning Seeds, Ocean Colour Scene and Cast. Bands which deserve to be forgotten about.

But there was some really great stuff that came out of britpop. My favourite bands would be Suede, Pulp and The Auteurs. I also dig Elastica, Puressence and Saint Etienne. I also must admit that I've never given Blur a proper chance and that I do like some of their singles. It's something that I've been meaning to rectify.

I'll take Cloudcuckooland over any album made by Oasis or Blur, or any mid 90s britpop band.

It's too general for my liking. There's so much variety in the artists that get placed into the category.

James 05-01-2014 09:47 AM

I love Pulp, I really like Blur, I adore The Auteurs. But Britpop as a whole pisses me off - people romanticise it so much.

It's music criticism, of course it is.

There's only one Pulp album after This is Hardcore - I think it's pretty good, but This is Hardcore was their peak IMO.

I really like Blur, especially their last two albums and the last two Britpop albums (Parklife and The Great Escape). Dog Man Star is also excellent. I don't enjoy Oasis.

You're right, I don't know what I was thinking came out after We Love Life. Hm.

I like Blur, just not certain songs. I'd listen to Tender over Song 2 any day.

Definitely agreed. Honestly I don't particularly like the self-titled album (even if "Beetlebum" is a good song). And all the Britpop albums are inconsistent for me - for every "He Thought of Cars", there's a "Mr. Robinson's Quango".

skimminstones 05-14-2014 08:28 AM

slightly before the term britpop took over but Adorable were my fav band of the period, along with quite a few of the shoegazing bands

desolatedeck 05-14-2014 04:31 PM

Lush! Love love Lush.

triumph 05-15-2014 04:45 AM

I remember listening to This Is The One in high school and having my mind blown. Stone Roses are amazing.

Agreed.

Also, not exactly Britpop, but since you mentioned them in the OP, Spiritualized's Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space might be my favorite album of the '90s.

It's more your style of music I suppose (based on what I have seen you post) but yeah, that's an extremely unpopular opinion. Thinking the album is good (I do) is also an unpopular opinion.
