80's alternative survivor

Pretty quiet here these days so I don't know if this will work but if it dies it dies no biggie.

I've listed 20 classic alternative bands. Everyone votes the bands off until there is one left standing to be proclaimed the greatest alternative band of all time! :)

The bands:

1. The Cure
2. The Smiths
3. Public Image
4. Joy Division
5. Bauhaus
6. Killing Joke
7. The Cramps
8. Siouxie and the banshees
9. Ministry
10. Sonic Youth
11. Nick cave & the Bad Seeds
12. Birthday Party
13. Dead can Dance
14. Violent Femmes
15. Sisters of Mercy
16. The Pogues
17. The Jesus and Mary Chain
18. Skinny Puppy
19. The Cult
20. The Dead Milkmen
21. Pixies
22. Echo & the Bunnymen (added)
23. Gang of Four (added)
24. Mission of Burma (added)

Rules and notes

1. You vote off two bands you don't like until we get to the top 10 than it is one band

2. I will let this sit for a week, to see if enough people want to play, than I will set a two day closing time for voting, but you can start voting now

3. If there are bands that you think should be added by all means let me know, I edited off some of my favs to go with the familiar.

4. Example how you play. I don't really like The Pixies or Sonic Youth so I vote

Pixies
Sonic Youth

so feel free to vote away

hate paper doll 05-11-2014 02:35 AM

I vote The Cult and The Pogues off and throw Echo And The Bunnymen in for consideration.

bob. 05-11-2014 03:56 PM

I'm in on this.....but itrequires much thought :)

GravitySlips 05-11-2014 03:58 PM

I'd say Ministry and The Cult are my least favourite of those.

bob. 05-11-2014 04:46 PM

^Blasphemer!

Yeah The Cult has to go....and I'd say knock of Dead Can Dance but only because I don't think they stand a chance against the big names up there :)

Psy-Fi 05-11-2014 05:20 PM

I also vote The Pogues and The Cult out.

And I'll suggest Gang of Four and Cocteau Twins for additions to the list.

Black Francis 05-11-2014 05:23 PM

I agree on The cult but i say keep the Pogues.

shouldn't they be eliminated after a set amount of votes? you should maybe specify that number..

Why are both bands down for Nick Cave, and the same was not for the members for Joy Division? Following that logic shouldn't it be 4. Joy Division/New Order? http://r17.imgfast.net/users/1715/23...iles/71464.gif

11. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds/Birthday Party are really not one of my favorites on that list.

Maybe once a band gets five votes they're eliminated? Also, how many times can we vote? It wouldn't be fair to vote over and over in order to get the five needed to eliminate, but there's only going to be so many people interested in the thread. Maybe one vote per round? I dunno, just throwing it out there. This could be a lot of fun, I'd hate to see it die.

James 05-11-2014 06:26 PM

I'll vote off The Cult and Sisters Of Mercy.
I'd suggest R.E.M., The Replacements and Hüsker Dü. I also second Gang Of Four.

Definitely second R.E.M. I love the other choices, but I'm not sure if they would be what OP is going for?

Zer0 05-11-2014 06:39 PM

I vote The Pogues and Ministry out.

I suggest Dinosaur Jr and second the suggestions for Husker Du and The Replacements.

I don't know, the margins seem very wide. There's everything from Noise Rock to Industrial in the OP. The three bands I put forward fit the typical 'Alternative' dynamic better than most. As for Gang Of Four, if PIL and Joy Division are included, they should be - because they're the best of the Post-Punk bands.

Ha - sorry!
I was never taken by Ministry but then again, it's been many years since I heard 'em. Perhaps they're due another listen. It was between them and The Pogues for me. I reckon The Cult need to be the first for the chop though, for sure :)

I also agree with Neapolitan that it's tricky to include Bad Seeds/Birthday Party as one vote - I much prefer The Birthday Party in general, and they'd be in my top 3 or 4 of the bands mentioned. Whereas the Bad Seeds aren't quite up there, good as they sometimes are. The Bad Seeds are more of an 80s product than TBP though - well, they released more anyway.

I think it's a good idea too but it needs to be organized a little..

Though im surprised the guy voted for The Pixies and Sonic youth on the first round, that's F*ckin crazy!

Yeah I know...some popular bands just don't turn my crank....ask Bob about Gorilla Biscuits.

Okay I've gone through everyone's questions so answers:

1. On REM, New Order & Husker Du

I am not going to add REM or New Order. I don't want to get into super bands that crowd out the little guy. If I open the door for them, than I have to open the door to the Depeche Mode, U2 and the whole New Wave world.

Husker Du falls into the same camp, if I open the door to them, than I have to open the door to the Dead Kennedys and the whole world of punk.

On the other bands

I took people's advice and split Nick Cave & the Birthday Party up.
I have added Gang of Four & Mission of Burma, and (barf) the Cocteau Twins, as well as The Chameleons Uk to get an even number. The Replacements r a bit too commercial but I'll add them if there is a mass outcry.

I don't want to the list to get too long but if anyone wants the following bands added or has something else to add let me know, , Pop Group, James Chance & the Contortions, New Model Army, Fields of Nephilim, Front Line Assembly, KMFDM

2.

You can only vote once per round. I'll take your idea into consideration, but for now, I just want to keep the rules simple.

3. The list updated

1. The Cure
2. The Smiths
3. Public Image
4. Joy Division
5. Bauhaus
6. Killing Joke
7. The Cramps
8. Siouxie and the banshees
9. Ministry
10. Sonic Youth
11. Nick cave & the Bad Seeds
12. Birthday Party
13. Dead can Dance
14. Violent Femmes
15. Sisters of Mercy
16. The Pogues
17. The Jesus and Mary Chain
18. Skinny Puppy
19. The Cult
20. The Dead Milkmen
21. Pixies
22. Echo & the Bunnymen (added)
23. Gang of Four (added)
24. Mission of Burma (added)
25. Cocteau Twins (added)
26. Chameleons UK (added)

I may have right f#cked things up here by adding new bands but we'll work it out before things kick off.

Well folks it looks like we have enough people to play but I'm not going to officially start till next Friday. Polls will close Friday night pacific time after that it will be every two days, so it would be Sunday night, Tuesday night ect.

If you just found this post and don't know what to do, look at the list and vote off your two least favourite bands, until we eventually determine the greatest alternative band of all time! :)

For those interested the current tally: If they're too close I will raise the vote count.

The Cult (6) The Pogues f me (3) Ministry (2) Pixies (1) Sonic Youth (1) Dead Can Dance (1) Nick Cave (1) Skinny Puppy (1) Sisters of Mercy (1) Black Francis you still have another vote.

Black Francis 05-11-2014 11:51 PM

The vote tally helps alot , i vote ministry..

If i may suggest, if you're keeping the vote count i suggest you update it in the OP that way we won't have to search through all the pages to find the updated vote count, it's on the first page.

just a suggestion.

hate paper doll 05-11-2014 11:54 PM

I'm psyched, this will be fun

Neapolitan 05-11-2014 11:55 PM

I voted off 11. Nick cave & the Bad Seeds. & 18. Skinny Puppy

I think it should be alphabetized so it doesn't look like The Cure is the number one band of the 80s band even before we begin. Also if the "ordered list" is used (

) it would make it easier if to add or subtract bands names, without subsequently change all the following numbers after a name is added/subtracted. (NB Bauhaus taking off the list is only used as an example.)

list with Bauhaus
 1. Bauhaus
 2. Birthday Party
 3. Chameleons UK (added)
 4. Cocteau Twins (added)
 5. The Cure
 6. The Cramps
 7. The Cult

I highly disagree with all of this. I don't know why The Dead Milkmen are included if we're trying to exclude Punk Rock. But it's your game so cool :)

I'm just not that into Goth. I can appreciate some Bauhaus but I could never really dig Sisters of Mercy. Such an awful band name too.

bob. 05-12-2014 06:28 AM

I've always assumed their name came from the Leonard Cohen song

thats it James.....I'm coming to Scotland to rat your hair, throw some thick eyeliner on you, and take you to an Alien Sex Fiend show

Naming your band after an awesome song by Leonard Cohen is far from awful in my book.

I don't really like band names that come from songs, it's not very original.

As far as I understand, this is where the name came from and it really doesn't have anything to do directly with the Leonard Cohen song.

I didn't include the two I voted off in the list (NC&tBS adn SP) because I didn't want to confuse why I include them when I voted them off... so anyway, with voting starting now... and with Will's ok this is the list:

Birthday Party,
Cocteau Twins,

Mission of Burma

Polls close Sunday, provided there are at least 5 votes

The link you provided contains a link to the band's page which says this:

Quote:

The name was influenced by Robert Altman's film McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), which featured the Leonard Cohen song "Sisters of Mercy" (from the album Songs of Leonard Cohen) ("because [calling ourselves] The Captains of Industry wouldn't have been as funny").
