I've heard that this band do have an acquired taste. But I'm intrigued (and also an oddball weirdo) and so I want to check them out. Any suggestions of where I should start?

I started with The Runner's Four, though that's 20 songs long. I haven't heard Apple O yet, so maybe it's a good choice.

Go with the one that's cheapest, I guess:

Apple O, The Runner's Four, Friend Opportunity. I would recommend Friend Opportunity after all their other efforts, except for Offend Maggie. Reason being is that Friend Opportunity just isn't as funky.

If you're going to listen to the Runner's Four, maybe preview the following tracks: O'Malley Former Underdog, Twin Killers, Running Thoughts, Spirit Ditties of No Tone (this is a especially awesome one) and Rrrrrrright.

Really decent. The Runners Four was a favourite of mine a while back. Siriustar and Wrong Time Capsule in particular are oh so positively delightful

Dont see the 'mellow Melt Banana' comparison at all though, far too eclectic for that

No one mentions holdy paws?! Thats my favorite of them all :) The great car tomb is one of my favorite songs of all time! MAgic star is quite good too

Has anybody heard Deerhoof vs. Evil yet?

hmm its pretty good, need to give it a few more listens how ever. It doesn't sound much like their other records less raw still interesting though

Got to about 3 tracks of Halcyon Dygest and gave up. Sounds like your regular lo-fi indie crap. Kinda too boring for me mfraid...

Deerhunter is like nothing else in the indie canon. Cox has one of the weirdest and most wonderful melodic minds. Listening a bit deeper across the records reveals depths of pop-craft talent uncommon to songwriters period.

If you were giving Halcyon Digest a go, you might at least have tried the tracks Desire Lines and Basement Scene. The former may just satisfy your thirst for pop. Then, I may be wrong.
