The Smiths are very melancholic, if not always in sound then certainly in content. 'How Soon Is Now', 'What Difference Does It Make' and 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' are good shouts.

Manic Street Preachers are also dark, especially their earlier works. 'A Design For Life', and 'Motorcycle Emptiness' showcase the same sort of existential crisis, dissatisfaction with life kind of feeling as The Smiths and Radiohead. They also have more specific songs like 'She Bathed Herself In A Bath of Bleach'.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds has some pretty depressing stuff.

For some reason, Joy Division can really make me sad. Perhaps "Atmosphere"?
